Sixers rookie McRae heading to Australia

Jordan McRae, with an assist from Sixers coach Brett Brown, signs to play for Melbourne team for upcoming season.

ANOTHER Sixers draft pick is set to not suit up for the team this season, as shooting guard Jordan McRae has signed to play with Melbourne United, of the National Basketball League in Australia, for the 2014-15 season.

The Sixers retain the rights to McRae, the 58th selection in June's draft out of Tennessee.

McRae played well in July's Las Vegas Summer League for the Sixers, leading the team in scoring with 21 points per game, third-highest in the entire tournament.

Sixers coach Brett Brown previously coached in the NBL and for the Australian national team, and aided McRae in signing in Australia.

Joel Embiid, the third pick of the 2014 draft, is expected to sit out this season for the Sixers as well, while recovering from a broken navicular bone in his right foot. Dario Saric, the 12th selection, won't join the Sixers for at least the next two seasons, as he signed a contract with Anadolu Efes, of the Turkish Basketball League, just before the draft.

Saric will compete in this year's FIBA World Cup for his native Croatia, which opens play today against the Philippines at 6:30 a.m.

The Sixers' season begins at Indiana on Oct. 29.
