Hinkie pleased with the talent Sixers picked up in Round 2

FOLLOWING 4 hours of moving and shaking during a busy first round of the NBA draft on Thursday night in Brooklyn, Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie sweetened the pot.

The Sixers finished the second round with six draft picks, before moving their No. 60 pick to the Nets and their No. 54 to the San Antonio Spurs.

And most of those late selections will likely see playing time for the club, unlike former Kansas big man Joel Embiid, who's sidelined with a broken navicular bone in his foot, and Croatian Dario Saric, who has a contract to play in Turkey.

Hinkie said he's been impressed with how fans have reacted to the franchise's process. He said he was "shocked by their knowledge."

"Our fans see that we have been remarkably consistent about trying to add talent to our team, the best we can find. We did that with Nerlens [Noel] and we did the same last night," Hinkie said during yesterday's media availability at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.

"We feel really happy about the way things turned out for us and the players we were able to bring in."

During the second round, the Sixers acquired Clemson's K.J. McDaniels, Syracuse's Jerami Grant, Tennessee's Jordan McRae and Vasilije Micic, a 6-6, 202-pound guard from Serbia, and traded their No. 47 pick, Louisville's Russ Smith, to the New Orleans Pelicans for the rights to former Baylor star Pierre Jackson.

McDaniels, a 6-6 guard, who was the Atlantic Coast Conference's Defensive Player of the Year while averaging 17.1 points, will thrive in head coach Brett Brown's uptempo offensive system, Hinkie said.

"K.J is someone we targeted much higher," Hinkie said. "He's wildly athletic, and he's really long, with a defensive mindset. He's sort of an unusual player, because he's a big-time shot-blocker from the wing position. We think he's a player in our system that can really flourish. He is surely a player that can benefit in a transition system like ours."

Grant, a 6-8 small forward, averaged 12.1 points and 8.6 rebounds during his sophomore season at Syracuse. Adding the athletic swingman adds another player who can run in Brown's transitional offense and adds chemistry with Michael Carter-Williams, who posted a picture with his college teammate on Instagram, congratulating him Thursday night.

And even though Hinkie didn't get the full evaluation he wanted with Grant before the draft, he and his new forward were both surprised Thursday night.

"With Jerami, we were shocked; I was just shocked," Hinkie said. "Even Jerami, I think, was shocked. He anticipated that he would go considerably higher. We didn't work him out . . . but we did get a chance to interview him in Chicago . . . so during our brief chance in Chicago we tried to maximize that."

Jackson, a 5-10 guard, averaged 29.1 points in 31 games for the Idaho Stampede, the Utah Jazz's NBA Developmental League affiliate. McRae, a 6-5 guard, averaged 18.7 points last season. Micic averaged 11.8 points in the Adriatic League overseas last season.

The Sixers will fill their Las Vegas and Orlando summer rosters with young talent. The Daily News has learned of nine players who will be included on either team:
