It's clear: No black mask for LeBron

Fade to black on LeBron James' protective face mask - at least the carbon-fiber version he wore Thursday against the N.Y. Knicks.

The Miami Heat star had not gotten NBA approval for the black mask to protect his broken nose, and the league directed him to wear a clear one.

"We've had numerous ones made, so he will have his pick and will choose one that is authorized also by the league," coach Erik Spoelstra told ESPN.com.

James wore a clear mask in Saturday's 112-98 home win over Orlando, scoring 20 points.

Meanwhile, the team has been selling T-shirts with a picture of James wearing the black mask.

The league has made similar rulings for Cleveland's Kyrie Irving and the Lakers' Kobe Bryant.
