Sixers Notes: Andrew Bynum inches closer to 76ers debut

Barring a setback, Andrew Bynum finally will put on a 76ers uniform next month, Sixers general manager Tony DiLeo said Monday night.

The Sixers have been bubbling with optimism as Bynum continues to work long after the team has broken practice. He also has participated in some of the team's shootarounds but has not had any physical contact.

"I think it will be sometime in February," DiLeo said of the 7-foot center's debut.

The best news of the day came from Bynum, who is recovering from bruises and weakened cartilage in both knees.

"I did dunk yesterday," he said.

"I think the first week in February is when he'll do more extensive basketball drills," DiLeo said. "Right now, we're just building up for where he can get on the floor and do a practice with the team."

The Boston Celtics have lost star point guard Rajon Rondo for the remainder of the season because of a torn knee ligament. Sixers forward Thaddeus Young pointed out that the door could be open for teams on the fringe of the playoffs if they start to make a move now. The Sixers began the night 21/2 games behind idle Boston for the eighth spot in the Eastern Conference.

"Rondo was the engine that made the car go," said Young, who added, "They have guys who can step up and play; they have superstars who can carry the load for them . . . but it's so hard to replace a guy like Rondo."

The Celtics will use the tandem of Avery Bradley and Courtney Lee to replace Rondo.

"It will be harder and they will have to adjust quickly," Young said

The Sixers signed point guard Shelvin Mack to a second 10-day contract.
