76ers Notes

LeBron James is switching numbers.

LYNNE SLADKY / Associated Press
The Cavs' LeBron James is campaigning to retire the number 23 in the NBA.
The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar has announced - tipping his cap to Michael Jordan - that he will switch from No. 23 to No. 6 at the start of next season.

"I feel like no NBA player should wear 23," James told TNT. "I'm starting a petition, and I've got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I'm not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it."

James' declaration affects 76ers point guard Lou Williams, who wears No. 23.

Williams, talking before last night's game against the Utah Jazz at the Wachovia Center, said he does not wear No. 23 because of Jordan, but would be willing to change his number out of respect for the famed Chicago Bulls guard.

"If he's on this mission to get guys to stop wearing No. 23 to pay homage to Michael Jordan, then I'm all for that," Williams said. "I'm not going to change my number because LeBron said to change my number, but I will because of the message he's sending."

Williams said he has been "bargain-hunting" in the Sixers' locker room for a replacement number.

"I wanted the number 45, because that was the number I was picked in the draft, but that would lead to Michael Jordan, too," he said.

Jordan wore No. 45 when he returned from retirement in 1995.

Utah's Williams a no-go

Deron Williams, Utah's starting point guard, was not with his team last night due to personal reasons. Williams is averaging 20.4 points and 9.9 assists a game. Williams, who lately got himself into trouble with Twitter by saying changes were needed, told the Salt Lake Tribune: "It's not the end of the world. I didn't mean to tweet like it was the end of the world. Just, we've got to do something. I know the fans watching, I know the fans sitting at home, they're not happy with us right now. I'm not happy with us, either."

No stopping Young

Sixers forward Thaddeus Young missed Thursday's practice with a left shoulder/neck muscle spasm, but started last night. He had been listed as a game-time decision.

Korver out

Former Sixers guard-forward Kyle Korver has yet to play a game this season. He underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Oct. 23.

Removing 23 from circulation is non-sense. Any such action should begin with the number 13. It's a measure of how diseased our culture is that so many need to adore to the point of reverent worship a mere athlete. (iao).

ANother show of power by the King! Want king wants, king gets. He can even get a NFL player moved to another city. And just what number did Jordan ask to retire in honor of those before him! NBA is down to two players The King, and Mr Kobe. Put the sixers in on top of that mess, and I would say the NBA stinks.

This idiot and MJ are both classless dickheads. Jordan never did anything for anyone but himself. It would be an affront to an athelete like Jackie Robinson to put MJ on a similar level.

I agree. MJ only cared about MJ. He's no Jackie Robinson. And Julius Erving [6] was a pretty good player in his time, and more of a trailblazer [ABA] than MJ.

Brilliant idea! And then after retiring Jordan's number, we can retire Magic's and Larry's and Kareem's and Wilt's and Dr. J's and Pistol Pete's and Archibald's and Barry's and Cousy's and Robertson's.... Doesn't LeBron have any idea about the history off the game?

King James is doing a good job of keeping his name in the media spotlight, but his campaign will never become a reality. Professional athletes are too egotistical, and maybe Lou Williams doesn't have an issue changing his number, but other players around the NBA will. I would love to be in the visitors locker room when the announcement is being made that Lebrons petition is being passed around. It will be crumpled up on the floor faster than the suit Larry Brown bought for Iverson.

Call me jaded and cynical, methinks LeBron's "Quest" might have less to do with his respect for Mike and a LOT MORE to do with the Air-heir's relationship with Nike. What are we on now? Air LeBron Series 7? Follow the money... It would be mind-blowing & bank-filling to Nike if Mike (Air Jordan) were officially recognized as the only NBA player to have his jersey number retired League wide. If LeBron could pull it off...WOW! Think of the commercials!!! Think of the new retro products! Think of the reward $$$ LeBron would get!!!

Why? If the Bulls want to retire 23, go for it. As far as I know, there's no reason why there should be a league-wide retiring of the number. This isn't like in baseball where 42 was retired league-wide to recognize Jackie Robinson's accomplishments.

..and LaQuanna, and Lemongeelo & Orangello (real names of twin brothers!), and Demontrious, and all the other made up AA names. Even real Africans are named John and Sally.

I suggest all of us with addresses using #23 sell them and fund LeBronno's quest to become assistant commissioner of the NBA. CHip in a few extra bucks in case he needs any sports fiqures traded to another town... I will only watch him to see him lose.
