Floyd back in N.O.

Tim Floyd said the opportunity to rejoin the New Orleans Hornets as a top assistant "seemed like a perfect scenario for me."

Floyd, a former head coach for New Orleans, formally returned to the club during yesterday's morning shootaround as the Hornets began preparations - under new head coach and former Floyd assistant Jeff Bower - to play Portland. Coach Byron Scott was fired Thursday.

Floyd resigned as Southern Cal's coach in June amid allegations he paid to have former USC star O.J. Mayo delivered to the Trojans. An NCAA probe is ongoing.

He coached the Hornets in 2003-04, going 41-41 before losing a first-round series to Miami in seven games.

Spurs edge closer

Tim Duncan and Tony Parker appear closer to returning to the San Antonio Spurs after missing two games with ankle injuries.

Parker and Duncan practiced yesterday and were listed as questionable for tonight's game against Oklahoma City.

Neither has played since each hurt his left ankle in a loss last week at Portland.

Howard still hurting

Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard is out indefinitely to continue his recovery from surgery on his left ankle, coach Rick Carlisle said yesterday.

Carlisle offered no timetable for Howard's return.

Nellie walks out

The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Golden State coach Don Nelson stormed out of practice Thursday after a dispute with guard Monta Ellis.
