No apology coming from Iverson

Allen Iverson sees no reason to apologize for a week of barbed comments when his only concern is helping the Memphis Grizzlies win, preferably as a starter.

Standing before his locker with a look of bemused frustration on his face last night, Iverson downplayed the various controversies caused by his comments during a tumultuous first week in a Memphis uniform.

Iverson returned from a torn right hamstring on Monday and immediately said he didn't like coming off the bench. He also insists nobody told him the Grizzlies would be rebuilding after a 24-58 season.

"Do I say all the right things all the time? I doubt it," Iverson said. "But the ultimate goal is to win games. That's the only thing it's about."

Iverson sees no reason to back down from his comments, but he also realizes they caused a stir because of his long history of provocative opinions and actions, from his infamous disdain for practice with the Sixers to a few lesser stirs in Denver and Detroit last season.

Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley shook hands with Iverson in the locker room last night and could be heard chatting about plans for a meeting with the veteran guard.

Heisley, who flew into Los Angeles earlier in the day, backed coach Lionel Hollins in the perceived dispute this week, saying the coach would handle the Grizzlies' rotation and calling Iverson's comments "inappropriate," according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

Hollins refused to speak about Iverson earlier in the week, but said yesterday he has no problem with Iverson's pointed words. He also doesn't intend to have a special chat with the 10-time All-Star. "Every player has his opinion of his self-worth and what he expects, but I have to coach the whole team," Hollins said.

Iverson got his first game action with the Grizzlies on Monday night in Sacramento, and played 27 minutes off the bench against Golden State on Wednesday. He was not in the starting lineup last night.

In games last night:

* At Boston, Jason Richardson scored 34 points and had 10 rebounds as the Phoenix Suns handed the Celtics their first loss of the season, 110-103.

* At Orlando, Dwight Howard had 22 points and 12 rebounds to help the Magic hold off Charlie Villanueva and the Detroit Pistons, 110-103. Villanueva scored 22 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't enough to get past the defending Eastern Conference champs, who led by 19 early and never trailed.

* At Miami, Dwyane Wade scored 22 points, Jermaine O'Neal added 18 and the Heat dealt the Denver Nuggets their first loss of the season, 96-88. Miami is 5-1 for only the third time in its 22 seasons, and beat Denver for the first time since Dec. 17, 2004. Denver (5-1) got 30 points from Carmelo Anthony.

* At New York, LeBron James scored 33 points in his only visit to Madison Square Garden this season, leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 100-91 victory over the Knicks.

* At Indianapolis, Tyler Hansbrough scored 13 points in his pro debut to help the Indiana Pacers beat the Washington Wizards, 102-86.

* At Charlotte, Raja Bell scored 24 points and the Bobcats beat the road-weary Atlanta Hawks, 103-83. Ronald "Flip" Murray, of Strawberry Mansion High, added 15 points in his Charlotte debut.

* At New Orleans, Chris Bosh scored 27 points and the Toronto Raptors used a 27-4 run in the third quarter to take a 107-90 victory over the New Orleans Hornets.

* At Minneapolis, Andrew Bogut had 17 points and 10 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks used a second-half surge to top the Minnesota Timberwolves, 87-72.

* At Houston, Trevor Ariza and Carl Landry scored 21 points apiece and the Rockets extended their winning streak over the Oklahoma City franchise to 11 games by beating the Thunder, 105-94. *

He should be happy he has a job in the NBA at all. No team can win with Iverson. Why would any team want him? Thank your lucky stars, Iverson. This is your last NBA contract.

Yikes. Iverson has become a caricature of himself right before our very eyes. The only franchise interested in him is a fringe NBA squad, at best, and he still doesn't get it. He'll end up de-activated at some point, and his career will be over. Sad that he never grew up.

@Neal Obstat - Sixer won a lot of games with A.I. Denver averaged 50+ wins with A.I. I feel A.I. on this issue. Mike Conly Jr. stinks. They should start A.I., but only after he learns the plays.

Iverson is, was and always will be a loser. He had a world of HOF talent but his selfish and insincere attitude has held him back from any chance of ever being a champion. If he played more like Isiah Thomas instead of playing for himself, acting and talking like an idiot and worrying about his unsavory friends and lifestyle, he would have won a Sixers championship or helped take some other team to one. Points per game aren't the only thing that wins titles.

I love Iverson to death, but he has one of those old fighters who are done and don't want to quit. I remember his days with the Sixers well, and always admired his on-court play, but sadly, that seems to be all he had. It is apparent more than ever that you need to bring more to the NBA than just an on-court game if you want to make it past 34.

I didn't think Iverson would blow up this early. You are looking at the end of the road. Iverson would be saying this even if Memphis was undefeated with him coming off the bench. It is all about starting and ppg., not about winning. He could be an asset to a team if he had the right attitude about his diminshed skills. He could be instant offense off the bench. What a shame to watch a once great indivdual player fade right before our eyes.

NBA = thug style b-ball...Nobody likes it. College students can get tickets for $5 in Philadelphia. Check out how many seats are empty in Philly and around the league these days. Unless they start giving away basketball tickets with food stamps and unemployment checks, nobody cares. That style of basketball isn't fun to watch.

As if there were any question that this league is a joke....did anyone see the Knicks/Cavs game the other night...What a farse! At one point Lebron was playing AIR GUITAR at the sideline while the game clock was running....if this is the approach of the premier player in this league - LOOK OUT BELOW!

Iverson would be the best player on the Cubs... I mean Grizzlies, if they would play him. Lionel Hollins is a bit of a problem here and it for him that Iverson is leaving. Memphis fans evisioned Iverson leading the way. I hope they enjoy Lionell Hollins winning s ways (I hope I spelled his name wrong).

"The Cancer," good one. Iverson causing trouble? Who would have thought? He is a role model for the NBA. Neanderthal Bonehead Association.
