Fight idles 'Big Baby'

Boston Celtics forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis had surgery yesterday on his right thumb, which he broke while fighting with a friend, a source told the Associated Press. Davis could be suspended, the team said.

Davis was not in Cleveland for last night's opener against the Cavaliers, Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said. The team confirmed that Davis was injured but did not specify the injury.

"We are talking with his represen-

tatives and will likely move to suspend him for a period of time once we have all the facts in front of us," Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said. "His contract prohibits certain off-court activities."

Davis became a free agent this summer but signed a two-year deal worth about $6 million.

Clippers lose Griffin

Blake Griffin, Los Angeles' No. 1 draft pick, will be off the court for six weeks after a stress fracture was discovered in his left kneecap.

The former Oklahoma star said he thought he could keep playing with pain in the knee, but an MRI yesterday confirmed the fracture.

Coach Mike Dunleavy said the forward would be shelved until next month at the earliest. Griffin averaged 13.7 points and 8.1 rebounds in the preseason.

Noteworthy

Minnesota big man Al Jefferson will play in the opener tonight against New Jersey despite battling an Achilles injury in recent weeks. T'wolves forward Kevin Love had surgery on a broken hand last week. . . . Charlotte guard Raja Bell said he was hopeful he could play this season with a torn ligament in his left wrist. Bell put off surgery that would sideline him for up to four months.
