But at the last second, he dished the ball to Thaddeus Young, who earned a trip to the free-throw line.
Yesterday, the lineup that most 76ers fans anticipated all summer - point guard Andre Miller, shooting guard Iguodala, small forward Young, power forward Elton Brand, and center Samuel Dalembert - held court at the Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's campus.
In the first official scrimmage of training camp, the Sixers' starting squad was exactly as predicted.
The second team included guards Lou Williams, Kareem Rush and Willie Green, along with power forward Reggie Evans and center Theo Ratliff.
In early July, the Sixers signed Brand, a two-time all-star. Since then, the penciled-in starting squad required a shift to small forward for Young and a shift to shooting guard for Iguodala.
But through two days of training camp, Sixers head coach Maurice Cheeks had plugged in free-agent Rush at shooting guard. Iguodala remained at small forward.
"I put different guys in that spot," Cheeks said. "But the first time we were going up and down with the clock and referees, I wanted to put Thaddeus in there."
"I knew they were going to throw a lot of different things at me this training camp as far as playing the three, four, two . . . so I was prepared for it," said Young, a second-year player who averaged 8.2 points a game as a rookie.
With two such athletic players on the wing - Iguodala is 6-foot-6, Young is 6-8 - the Sixers should have a formidable defensive, and rebounding, presence. During yesterday's scrimmage, the duo combined for a number of deflections, one leading to a breakaway dunk by Iguodala.
The one concern is outside shooting. Neither Iguodala nor Young made an outside shot, despite wide-open looks when the defense double-teamed Brand.
"They say when you're open, shoot it," Young said. "So I was, you know, shooting it."
"I'm not sure what the starting five will be," Brand said. "But early on, it looked good today. It was very athletic, we were running, rebounding, and playing defense and that's how we're going to win ball games."
Brand, who has also played for the Bulls and Clippers, said his former teams "didn't have the athletes this team has."
Notes. Iguodala sat out both of Wednesday's sessions with a sprained left ankle, but he showed no ill-effects during yesterday's scrimmage. . . . Cheeks called the offensive execution in yesterday's scrimmage "not good," but said, "The first time you're running up and down the court in a controlled setting it's going to be a little ragged." . . . Cheeks said veteran free-agent additions Donyell Marshall and Ratliff are "worth their weight in gold," then praised their on-court leadership.
