Here's how it would read: Andre Miller at point guard, Andre Iguodala at shooting guard, Thaddeus Young at small forward, Brand at power forward, and Samuel Dalembert at center.
But yesterday at the Wachovia Center, where the Sixers held their annual media luncheon, head coach Maurice Cheeks threw a wrench into that prediction.
"I never said Andre [Iguodala] was going to switch to the two-spot," Cheeks said. "As of now, it's open."
Since the Sixers signed Brand in early July, the position up for debate has been small forward. Iguodala, 6-foot-6, has effectively played that spot since 2004-05, his rookie season.
But with the addition of Brand, a true power forward, the popular assumption has been that the 6-foot-8 Young, a promising second-year player, would slide to small forward, his more natural position, thus bumping Iguodala to shooting guard.
Of the small-forward position, Cheeks said: "There is no clear-cut starter there now. That's why there is [training] camp and preseason games. Let's play it out. Obviously, Andre [Iguodala] has been at that position."
Young's stock rose at the end of last season when he averaged 10.2 points a game in the playoffs. Cheeks' point was clear, though: He wants open competition at training camp.
The revelation - at least from Cheeks' words - that Iguodala might still remain at small forward, begs the question: If that's the case, who will start at shooting guard?
The options appear three-fold: Fourth-year guard Lou Williams, who until this season has been a sparkplug off the bench; free-agent Kareem Rush, who is known for his deft touch from beyond the arc; and Royal Ivey, a free-agent guard who signed with the club in July and has a reputation as a defensive stopper.
With all the new faces - six to be exact - Cheeks said he would scrimmage more than usual during training camp, which starts Tuesday at Penn State. He said, along with evaluating what lineups work well together, he wants the players to become accustomed with one another.
Cheeks said he would have various lineups on the floor, constantly mixing things up.
"What lineup I start with at one point doesn't mean it's going to necessarily be the starting team," Cheeks said of the coming camp.
The Sixers announced their 19-man roster for training camp, which starts Tuesday at Penn State. Named yesterday was Maureece Rice, the former Strawberry Mansion High School star who scored 2,681 points in high school, surpassing Wilt Chamberlain's city mark of 2,206 points. Rice played collegiately at George Washington.
