The next 76er? We try to pick the one

Daily News sports writers John Smallwood and Phil Jasner have selected eight players the Sixers could draft tomorrow with their first pick, 16th overall. Here is what they have to say about each player and a rating from 1 to 10 on the likelihood that he will be taken by the Sixers (1 is least likely and 10 is most likely). Information includes the player's height, weight, age, position and school.

Darrell Arthur, 6-9, 216, 20, forward, Kansas

SMALLWOOD: Seems as if he's a little undersized to me to be a legitimate post-playing threat for the Sixers. They don't need another swing man on the front court, particularly one who only attempted 17 three-pointers in two collegiate seasons and missed 15. METER READING: 2.

JASNER: Two nice seasons at Kansas, including an NCAA championship, are in his favor. If he seems a bit undersized as a power forward, the Sixers believe the league is moving toward smaller, more mobile ones who can take their game to the perimeter. METER READING: 7

J.J. Hickson, 6-9, 240, 19, forward, North Carolina State

SMALLWOOD: Didn't the Sixers draft a better version of this guy last year? Hickson may have more of a power-forward mentality, but unless he has a growth spurt, he still has a small-forward frame in the NBA. He won't be an effective scorer or rebounder at the four. METER READING: 3

JASNER: So far, he's the only one brought in twice by No. 17 Toronto, although the Raptors were in Philadelphia to observe Arthur and Frenchman Alexis Ajinca. He averaged 14.8 points and an impressive 8.5 rebounds in his one season; he was the No. 2 rebounder in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He seemed to be climbing the charts as the week progressed. METER READING: 5

DeAndre Jordan, 6-11, 250, 20, center, Texas A&M

SMALLWOOD: Here are three reasons why 7-foot, 250-pounders fail to dominate in college: lack of skill, soft personality or poor work ethic. It's rare that any of those traits change once a player gets to the NBA. Sixers president Ed Stefanski spent a long time with the Nets waiting on Jason Collins. METER READING: 4

JASNER: Typical of the days just before the draft, some say he's rising, some say he's falling. He spent nearly 2 months training in Philadelphia, so it's likely the Sixers have seen more of him than anyone. METER READING: 5

Donte Greene, 6-9, 221, 20, forward, Syracuse

SMALLWOOD: It's nice that Greene has a perimeter shot, but unless your last name is Nowitzki, I'm not sure why a 6-11 guy is shooting 261 treys. He does rebound and block shots so if he can develop a power-forward mentality, Greene may look good paired with Thaddeus Young down the road. METER READING: 5

JASNER: He seems to have a small-forward mentality, not to mention an offensive mentality. He averaged 17.7 points in his one college season, but shot just 41.8 percent from the floor. METER READING: 3

Kosta Koufos, 7-1, 265, 19, center, Ohio State

SMALLWOOD: Ranking fifth in scoring (14.4) and rebounding (6.7) as a freshman in the Big Ten eases some questions about his toughness. He has legitimate center height, post-up and perimeter skills and a high basketball IQ. You could do worse at No. 16. METER READING: 6

JASNER: He was born and raised in Canton, Ohio, but has a European style, holding dual citizenship with Greece. He's a legitimate 7-footer who can face the basket and shoot. Is he tough enough? METER READING: 4

Robin Lopez, 7-0, 245, 20, center, Stanford

SMALLWOOD: That last time twin 7-seven footers came out of Stanford, neither lived up to the hype. At least Jarron Collins wasn't a lottery-pick bust like Jason Collins. Brook and Robin Lopez are a better combination. Robin is not as polished as Brook, but he's athletic, physical, rebounds and plays hard on defense. METER READING: 7

JASNER: He's supposedly a high energy rebounder (5.7 as a sophomore), but with less offensive skills than his twin brother, Brook. The Sixers had some interest in seeing him, but he stopped visiting teams after suffering an ankle injury and didn't want to go through just the interview process. METER READING: 4

Marresse Speights, 6-10, 245, 19, forward, Florida

SMALLWOOD: Played behind two top-10 picks (Al Horford and Joakim Noah) as a freshman at Florida, so his modest numbers (4.1 ppg, 2.6 rpg) can be excused. Improving to 14.5 points and 8.1 rebounds is the type of leap you want to see. Shot 62 percent from the floor. Speights' strength and potential is hard to pass up in the middle of a draft. METER READING: 9

JASNER: He played minimally as a freshman backup on a national championship team in 2006-07, then improved significantly as a sophomore starter. ESPN analyst Jay Bilas mentioned him as "a really good pick in the middle of the first round; he's got a chance to be really good." The Sixers, you probably noticed, are right there in the middle. METER READING: 6

Ryan Anderson, 6-10, 225, 20, forward, California

SMALLWOOD: What's not to like about this guy? He played in the PAC 10 and started every game for two seasons. As a sophomore, he grabbed more than 300 rebounds. Scores inside, scores outside, fights for rebounds, gets fouled and makes free throws (173 of 199, or 86.9 percent). METER READING: 9

JASNER: He led the PAC-10 in scoring with a 21.1 average as sophomore this past season, and started all 66 games of his college career, becoming the school's first soph to crack 1,000 points (1,236). He seems a more likely pick later in the round. METER READING 4
