Ear infection may sideline Cavaliers' Ben Wallace

Cleveland Cavaliers starting forward Ben Wallace is doubtful for tonight's Game 3 of Cleveland's playoff series against the Boston Celtics because of allergies and a left inner ear infection.

Wallace played less than 4 minutes in Thursday night's game before he became dizzy and asked to come out. He staggered to the bench and had to be assisted by his teammates before the Cavs' training staff stepped in.

Wallace underwent a series of tests at the Cleveland Clinic yesterday. The team said the defensive stopper could be upgraded but it was "best case, 50-50" that Wallace would play in Game 3.

Cavaliers coach Mike Brown said if Wallace can't go, Anderson Varejao would likely start up front alongside LeBron James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas as Cleveland tries to climb back from an 0-2 deficit in the best-of-seven series.

* The Pistons are aggressively treating Chauncey Billups' strained hamstring and hope he can return for tonight's Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series in Orlando, but he'll be a game-time decision.

If he can't go, rookie Rodney Stuckey, drafted No. 15 overall out of Eastern Washington last June, will make his third career NBA start. The Pistons actually chose him with a pick dealt from Orlando in a trade for Carlos Arroyo and Darko Milicic.

Billups said yesterday that he was feeling a little better, but still couldn't manage a fast walk. The Pistons planned to try some running and a stronger workout today.

* Despite speculation that Mike D'Antoni is headed to Chicago or New York, Phoenix point guard Steve Nash expects his coach to be back on the Suns' bench next season.

Beyond that, the two-time NBA MVP had little to say about the Suns' ongoing coaching saga during a charity appearance yesterday.

"This is the last thing I'm going to say about our coaching situation: Mike's my coach," Nash said, "so I expect to see Mike back here next year. And I know there's a lot of stuff going on right now, but Mike's my coach. I love playing for him. I expect to see him back in October."

D'Antoni, who has 2 years and $8.5 million remaining on his contract, reportedly has been courted by the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks. Earlier this week, the Suns granted D'Antoni permission to speak to other teams even as the team expressed hope he would remain with it. *
