Sixers sign Moultrie and Harkless
John Mitchell, Inquirer Staff Writer
The Sixers signed rookies Maurice Harkless and Arnett Moultrie on Tuesday.
Harkless was the 15th overall pick in last month’s NBA draft. The Sixers acquired Moultrie, drafted with the 27th pick overall pick by Miami, by trading the draft rights to Justin Hamilton (45th pick overall) and a protected future first round pick.
Terms of the deals were not disclosed. However, Harkless will make $1.73 million as a rookie. Moultrie will earn $1.04 million.
Harkless (6-8, 208), who left St. John’s following a rookie season that saw him average 15.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and shoot better than 45 percent from the field, was named Big East Rookie of the Year last season. Harkless ranked sixth in the nation in scoring among freshman and second in rebounding.
Moultrie (6-11, 249) left Mississippi following a junior season in which he averaged 16.4 points, 10.5 rebounds while shooting almost 55 percent from the field. Moultrie, Moultrie, named First Team All-SEC last season, led the conference in rebounding and ranked 10th overall in the nation.
lets see: Harkless wont have a rookie season. wish they could stash him in europe for two years, because dont really know how much he would get out of the nbdl.
Our frontline is so terrible, that eventually, the old geezer will have to see what he can get out of arnette! johnGiam
Somebody please tell me what they're feeding Moultrie that has made him 249 pounds?...He weighed 232 on June 8th at the Pre Draft Combine!...Glad to see Harkless just gained a single pound since that date (?), but last time I checked, a student athlete's first year in college is called "freshman year", not "rookie season"...Anyway, congrats on contract signings...get a good lease on a cool Old City condo, get a nice ride (one that can navigate sinkholes), and get ready to put some serious work in...BTW, Moultrie went to Miss State (after transferring from UTEP)...not Mississippi...Last, what is "Moultrie,Moultrie"?...is that some kind of code for "Pizza,Pizza"? bearsfriend
Wow: both John Mitchell and Bob Cooney posting at about the same time today, in depth details of two rookie signings (much of which is wrong, as Bear points out) and further rumors of the capologist, Joe Banner Penn, being named DC's lackey. BTW: I see the earlier rumors of Penn being the next GM with almost 40 comments has disappeared. chuckw- I actually thought the newsroom staff posted that..you're right, as it says "posted by John Mitchell"...He must've been at a seriously kickin happy hour somewhere when these signings broke.

Sweet! Two more rookies who will rarely play. What is the obsession with 6'7" players who can't shoot? I just don't get this team, why waste the #15 pick on a player who will never see the court? I am sorry but this team has a MAX of 2 starters (Jrue & Iggy), the rest wouldn't start anywhere else. Plus the Sixers have NEVER developed a player, not once! Take a look, Jrue, Thad, Iggy, Turner, Hawes, Vuc - not a single one of them has really developed. You could make a argument that a few of the players I mentioned are already regressing. Being a Sixers fan is a complete waste of time. Kwame Brown? Seriously? Was he brought in to scare Evan Turner? Get a jump shot Evan or you will be a joke like Kwame. buy_me_toys!
Does anyone actually think this team will be competitive over 82 games? Not I. OldCoach
Great that they signed their picks, but really, what was the other option? They weren't going to hold out. It sure is looking like the offseason is in wind-up mode with the expected signing of Penn. I really hope that in the days and weeks ahead, we get some sense of where this is going. The last couple of months have been drab - every move they've made has rated barely more than a shrug, or wait-and-see. To top it off, there is next to no comment coming from the gurus that give an indication of what the plan is. I'm ok with going in to the season with what we have if I knew something of how they hope things play out. But right now, do we even know if THEY know? I was optimistic that the lack of comment from the FO was that they were working behind the scenes on some big deal (Iggy, Thad, ET, etc.). They may be, but not seeing it right now. pfes
Is there anyone the Brooklyn Nets DON'T want?...Rumors have them closing in on AK47....Mikhail Prokhorov is looking more and more like "Ivan Drago", but Josh Harris sure does not look like Rocky...Maybe Adam Aron can pass for "Paulie". bearsfriend

BTW: great that they decide to name a new General Manager AFTER the draft rather than right after the season ended, as they knew they were pushing Thorn out the door into consulting heaven. Proves even more that DC IS the new GM. Lovers of DC, beware of what you wish for. chuckw- I hear you, chuckw. Doug's done a great job infusing the team with some energy. Now can he take the next step and adjust how he handles all the new guys. Early returns are mixed - big year coming up for growth in alot of guys like Jrue, ET, Thad, Vuc, and the rooks. And right now our eggs are in DC's basket.

Quixote II: beginning to think Virginia Avenue is the end of the line. chuckw
The Team has a good plan, love these signings. sdeens
Doug Collins has been given full control of this team, no idea why! He has never coached a team to a 'ship main liner
As a Sixers optimist, I am extremely excited to see if these two rookies have an impact in year one. I think both leapfrog Vucevic in the rotation and play much better than expected, making us more athletic and a better shooting team. Bobby V
My prediction for this year is 45-37, by the way. 6th seed. Bobby V
Quixote, since you apparently are much more in tune with The Sixers, how about for once you put the witty nonsense aside and actually talk x's and o's and FOR ONCE, give a straight up, no garbage prediction of your own. No cliche's, so silly mundane phrases......just chat hoops. Or is that not in your "make up"? Bobby V
