Sixers agree to terms with Royal Ivey
Guard Royal Ivey has returned to the Sixers, coach Doug Collins told reporters today.
The 6-4 Ivey played in 71 games with the Sixers in 2008-09, averaging 3 points per game in 12.1 minutes as a reserve. Ivey appeared in 26 games the following season before he was traded to Milwaukee in the deal that brought Jodie Meeks.
He spent the last two seasons with Oklahoma City, playing in 25 games two years ago and 34 games last season. He also appeared in five playoff games as the Thunder reached the NBA Finals this past season.
In eight seasons out of the University of Texas, Ivey, 31, has averaged 3.4 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists.
Collins also announced that Kwame Brown passed his physical. The 30-year-old center will be joining his seventh NBA team since being selected with the No. 1 overall pick out of high school in 2001.
Eh...why? Taxes
Comment removed.- A really good assessment of the thought process in DC's head, and what his hope for Ivey's season could play out as a veteran deep on the bench...It appears DC wants to win 75-72...I would say "it's always lonely at the top", but I'm sorry to say your win total is heavy about 15 games.
bearsfriend - A good veteran guard combo guard who can defend. If you look at the roster, we needed a back-up point guard and a guard that can defend. Good signing. I am more optimistic than bearsfriend, but I still think 54 wins is way too high. I'll go with 43.

Ah, the missing piece. The Larry O'Brien trophy shall be ours!! Vituperator
Ice the Champagne. This move means NBA Championship. BMJ
Royal Ivey????? brizz33
Another guard do we really need this guy.... and why would we need him? DAm 76ers really just making me sick here!!!! srcdaddy1216- Another guard? Because we have Holiday and Turner with Nick Young to back-up at shooting guard? And if one gets injured then the other two can just play all 48 minutes? Seriously people, why do you get upset when the Sixers sign back-up players to fill out their roster?
BeFrank
There are no players that the 76ers can sign or trade for that makes this team a contender next season. They need to develop their young players so they have value in a trade. If they have players that don't fit, they'll be ok if these young players develop value. These short term players make the 76ers better but they are really just a bridge until they completely rebuild. Short term deals that have trade value. No long term money tied up. If Drue and Evan can't play together, trade one. This is the time to push these young guys and see who has what. Then they can assess where they are at with the team and start making changes. If things work out, we're 3 years from being a contender with a 4 year window. Think long term. It's our only chance. MikeP- He's entering his 4th season. I think we can all respect that his name is J-R-U-E

Woo I love this move. He was hot on the market so I hope they gave him the Kwame Special of 2 years, 6 million.
Anyone see this?
The Andre Iguodala dream can just about die. The source said the Wolves have done a ton of homework on him, and the feedback didn't all register positively. Because of that, they are reluctant to give up assets and pay him $30 million over the next two years. His contract has a player option for 2013-14, which he is expected to opt into.
Even Kahn doesn't want him...we are screwed.
The Villain ET
I love the name don't get me wrong..." A Royal with Cheese " like Sam Jackson and Travolta from Pulp Fiction would say- but this is the backup PG??- Aarron Brooks would have been better but I guess Sac town beat us to it.
friedmozzarela
The Eagles should take this approach and re-sign Todd Pinkston. diamondd40
Wow this is huge Adam....how about Roy Hinson? Shucks that we missed out on Jerry Stackhouse...
Why don't we go with the rest of the NBA and sign some 40 year old cadavers...it just shows the lack of development of young players at the college level who come in the NBA way too early and the fact that their "games" all go stagnant as they collect their $$$$ the first few years...
Check out the 2010 NBA draft---nobody of note in the whole first round...sad,sad,...Fans are getting a watered down product.... Idaho76erfan- Are you joking? You can make the argument that the NBA has never had a deeper crop of talent. All the guys from the 2003-2006 draft classes are in their primes, some older guys from the 90s like Kobe, Duncan, Pierce, and KG are still knocking around, and the draft classes of the last 4-5 years are starting to mature, starting with Kevin Durant. The main problem is instead of having 22-24 teams like in the 80s, when another bumper crop of talent was in the league, you have 30 teams vying for top talents. The league should contract 2 or 4 franchises; that way guys like Danny Granger and Iggy could fulfil their destiny as a team's James Worthy; a great third option who cannot carry a team to a title alone.
le sigh
Wow an even crappier signing than Brown... bolt248
I just don't get this or the Kwame Brown signing. If they are truly "bridging" to a re-build post Iguodala, why not fill these spots with young, emerging talent that might have a chance of helping that process down the road? Really like what they did in getting N. Young and D. Wright, bringing back Lavoy and even re-signing Hawes, who still young and on a very reasonable (and tradable) deal for his skill set. Clearly, we're stuck with Iggy for another year, but will get to see what Turner and Holiday and the new rookies can really do. Giving any time to Brown and Ivey will just take away valuable minutes from kids who need the playing time. jmk1512- Okay, I get your point with Brown. I would rather see Allen and Moultrie develop than watch Kwame, but the guard position is in a different situation. Turner and Holiday, our young guards are going to start. They will get their minutes and right now we don't have anyone else other than Nick Young, who is a wing player (SG, SF) and should not ever play the point. There are no other young guards on this team for Ivey to steal minutes from unless they sign an undrafted FA lie Jacob Pullen, but honestly, Ivey is a decent player, a good defender and a good back-up to fill out the roster.
BeFrank
did he also get a player option for a 2nd year?? jodya2
Was actually excited with the draft and Nick Young.... now I am really EXCITED!!!!!!!! Royal and Kwame?? When does this stupid season start!!!!!!! I hope there are season tickets left next to that white hair'd bro!!!!!!! CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!! FABER
I suspect the other shoe has yet to drop this offseason. NorthPhillyTechie
More like Poison Ivy? jmmdk5
Imagine the Sixers' management in deep, deep complex thought.. who should we sign to make our team better? Then a voice, we don't know who, says " go get Kwame Brown and Royal Ivey". The fans will love it and well there really aren't any other options! Euphoria sweeps the room knowing that they have done their creative best. Sixers' management is now at peace. Wow, are these guys good. jmb53
Huh?? Why?? SKVU
more trash for the dumpster... lanzascat
These transactions are not part of a championship plan for this season. These are roster-filling moves that will give the Sixers a couple expiring deals for the 2013-14 season. The plan is clearly to roll the dice in FA in the summer of 2013, and if that doesn't work out, they will have flexibility to trade players and/or expiring contracts during the 2013-14 season to obtain someone they covet. 2012-13 is meant to compete and give the core of this team one last run-out to see what pieces are keepers and which can and should be shopped. le sigh- that is what the team is saying and that is also what they are trying to sell us. Unfortunately for us Mr. Stern has other ideas.

One of the best names in basketball, though CMattyG
How much did he have to pay the Sixers. Why?
GOLDY2007
i love the pple sarcastically calling us champs....like bringing in howard and williams and any other FA this year was going to lead to us beating the heat or thunder next yr. honestly i'm good with these signings b/c i want to see what jrue, turner, moultrie, vuce and hawes have. nobody's beating the heat the next couple of years and i'd like to see if any of these guys are worth keeping. so why should we spend $ on players like humphries to try and win a championship that we can't win while these guys take minutes away from players who might be able to help us win a title in the future. 76ers in 2076
Brown is like a son to DC... and Royal is like a brother? jmb53
Just a practice player, guys. He won't even be on the roster when the season starts. jklinger
OMG main liner- I'd rather have poison ivey
Whenever I see the headline like this one, I can't wait to see the comments section, sort of like having to rubberneck an accident on the highway. You know it's going to be bad, but you have to look. I don't have any problem with this or even the Brown signing, IF they do something big that makes the team better. Every team has to sign backup players and announce it, but after Brand was amnestied, I thought that there would be at least one big move. You don't amnesty a contract like that one, spending all of that extra money, without doing something big. C'mon, Sixers! mjc1
This is a better move than the Brown deal. Ivey is a true veteran leader which every locker room needs. He is an insurance point guard. That's it. philsix6- True...but in Jrue,ET,Nick Young, and Royal Ivey...the Sixers easily have arguably the slowest backcourt in the NBA...Where's the "quick" element?...A darting penetrator as a change of pace to Jrue and ET would have been nice...Ivey will come in for defensive substitutions at the end of quarters, when DC likes to overcoach.
bearsfriend
"We are Family..." Sister Sledge will become the Kate Smith of the Sixers! JBP
How sweet it is....love the move Doug....Let's bring back Tyrone Hill...what an off season it would be! StewieLavin27
With all of these insignificant, head-scratching moves, the Sixers should have no problem missing the playoffs. gentian
Are the Sixers trying to break some sort of record to see how many bums they can sign? I'd rather watch the posters on this board play; or watch paint dry. Geesh! Xavier19
It's becoming comical now. Are they all born under the sign of the Pisces? Phillyburb
I actually like this move, for what it is - I was a little worried that they might try and grab a Jonny Flynn or Aaron Brooks to fill Lou Williams role as the scoring guy off the bench. With Ivey, you get a guy who has size (for a PG) and can play some defense, and won't take up a bunch of minutes. The gameplan is hopefully to start Jrue and Nick Young with ET filling Lou's spot as the sixth man/scoring specialist. You saw what ET could do when the offense was focused around him last year, so rather than playing "who's the PG" games with both him and Jrue in the starting lineup, you let him be the focal point of your second unit. At least that's what I'm hoping they'll do. JLB
A joke. An absolute joke. What the hell are they thinking about?

One would hope that there is a deeper more complex plan at play here.
Something to dissuade us from what appears to be a case of ...

Didn't they get rid of Royal? Idaho76erfan
huh? WTF? how can this be? He is worst than Jodie Meeks??? cancerouscynic
Right now, the Lakers are on the verge of acquiring Dwight Howard. Why is it that the Lakers, Heat and Celtics continue to figure it out and the 76ers embrace mediocrity or worse? Did this off season really improve the team? The 76ers brought in Nick Young, Dorell Wright, Kwame Brown, Royal Ivey and two first round "project" picks. while losing Elton Brand and Lou Williams. Is this team really better? Teams that are agressive and creative win titles. Teams that lose mediocre players and replace them with other mediocre players remain, well, mediocre. The only way that the message gets through to management is by not renewing season tickets and not going to the games. Kwame Brown? Royal Ivey? Please.
syddan26- because the NBA is fixed or at least tilted heavily towards a handful of teams - Celtics, Lakers, Bulls, Spurs and now OKC and Miami.
coloradoeagle - Royal Ivey is this generation's Kevin Ollie
- Good one.
bearsfriend
Question 4 bearsfriend, is Ivey another Bartelstein client? If so, I see a theme building here. dudega- Ivey's agent is Jim Tanner, who's # is in Rod's phone, as he's dealt with the Sixers this past year representing both Thad Young and Tony Battie....while Ivey fits DC's puzzle as a three point shooting defensive presence on the perimeter, this is definitely a "been there, done that"...A good soldier, no hassle for DC with his 13th man, but for fans, this does not rival Cliff Lee as a guy "we have to get back"...I'd have preferred some upside to my deep backups...DC's safe. He likes insurance.
bearsfriend
The NBA is the SUCK. When you are stuck in mediocrity, like the Sixers are, you are stuck there for eons. Just trade everyone, including Jrue, suck for three years, then become a contender in 5-6 years. Its quicker than the route they are taking now. SilliBilli
Rod Thorn just said, "we like Royal and his growth plates are still open so he could be an option at power forward down the road." jmb53

While I understand not every acquisition has to be a "game changer", and that teams have to fit in terms of chemistry and leadership intangibles...but was a Wayns or Machado type ever considered?...Let's face it, the defensive lens' on DC are getting THICKER, and to be hionest...he's a "heightist"...Quick,little guards of the world..unite. bearsfriend
Welcome back Blue. I like the move. Good/willing ball defender. Can hit a 3. Used to the end of the bench. And a fight mentality. combocancer1975
I remember royal was tangled up for a jump ball. Before the toss up yunno you are supposed to stand on your side of the line and the other guy on ther other side of the line. Before the jump Ivey has crossed the line standing in front of the guy staring him DIRECTLY in the eye impeding his progress to the line. I like that. I loved that. combocancer1975- Name a backcourt in the NBA slower that the Sixers'.
bearsfriend - We are slow when we dribble. Evan Turner. When we push the sideline we are scary fast. Check the nets game when Thad threw iguodala that lob. I was getting nervous watching it. I couldn't believe how well it was working. That's why I wanted us to do it after makes and misses.
combocancer1975
Sixers agree to terms with Ivy.....more like can i please come back......i guess! huntnmike3666
Keep adding the pieces Doug. The morons will buy the playoff tickets after we win 50 games, and make it to the conference finals. triad- Just like the morons who've been buying Flyers tickets even though they haven't won since '75? Or the morons buying Eagles tickets even though they haven't won since '60? Are you talking about those morons?
This comment has been deleted. Quixote II- larry brown all over again. A stubborn old man who refuses to play and develope young talent. 1 mental mistake and they get yanked out of the game. no defined roles, no continuity..every day each player has a new role. just alot of pissing in my ear and telling me its rain!
btw, if some dares ever again compare Iggy to hall of famer, BIG GAME JAMES WORTHY, I will SNAP!!! johnGiam - johnGiam: I know you like to post every non-sequitur that pops into your head but at least have your facts straight. Someone just posted the other day that Larry Brown was the last Sixer coach that gave minutes to young players. Tim Thomas, Larry Hughes and Speedy Claxton all got significant minutes as rookies and he built the team around 2nd year Allen Iverson. At every stop Brown gave minutes to rookies and 2nd year players
- I could find a couple North Philly playground ballers that could take Kwame and Royal 2 on 2
i wont bash him as a 13th man, BUT I really wanted to believe that these new owners were different, and got the message. shame on me! Im fed up. I wont be going to games this year. I just cant support amnestying a Philly max contract guy for 18mil, and using that money for mediocre slop...If this is the team that you are going to field, then I swear on anything, I would much prefer starting Jrue, Nick young, Turner, moultrie, Vucevic, with Harkless as the 1st man off the bench, and just let them play 38min a game and grow together! we would probably land the 5th pick in the draft. I have come to the realization that this front office is hopeless, and that the only chance that we ever have as a franchise is if the young players that are already on this roster become studs. thats seriously our only hope. might as well ride and die with the youngbucks. whats the point of being competitive with this roster. i have a general manager who reminds me of a narcoleptic, and a coach who thinks its a good idea to start kwame brown, with hawes at the 4...i guess DC forgot the 90% of the nba is pick n roll and pick n roll defense...we dont do that though! our go to play is the 3 man weave/hand off in the back court.
oh well, looks like im going to be watching alot of timberwolves, rockets, bobcats, kings games tis year! johnGiam
Jrue, Turner,, Iguodala, Big A, Spencer.
Nick,Dorrel,Thad, Lavoy, Nik
Kwame, Maurice(D-League), Royal. I like it. I want Big A and Maurice to play a regular college season. After the Ncaa tournament. shut em down. Finish the season with lavoy and vuc. Playoffs all 4 are ready.. combocancer1975
Quixote: I think the Kwame Brown signing tells you what Doug thinks of Vuc. Not sure what is going on with him, but he is never mentioned by the "brass" and him sitting out summer league wasn't good.
In regards to Royal he will see about as much time as he saw in OKC. He is a towel waiver and a good locker room guy. He at least was a part of a winning team in OKC and can bring some leadership. Jrue will be playing near 40 minutes this year and I would expect that Turner will be logging the majority of backup minutes. Mattb- I'm wondering what DC thinks of Faried...16/15 and 5 blocks, and he was beating himself up over his poor play....Regarding Jrue and ET's workload, it's going to be HEAVY...The last 2 seasons, knock on wood, they've been SUPER durable...But what happens if an ankle turns, or a flu bug sets in?
bearsfriend - Mattb: good call on Vuc. He was the softest of the soft big men and didn't ingratiate himself to Collins. If he doesn't come out ballin and Moultrie shows promise Vuc could end up being the 5th big man by the end of the season.
There goes my NBA league pass. ssaun
How disappointing. I get why DC signed him, tall, good defender, and a good locker room guy. But where's the upside? He's 31. I believe the bottom of the roster should be filled with young player with upside. With the hope we hit on one. I'd rather lose with the feeling it was because we were young and can get bettervs we played our best and just suck. The FO should realize that fans will come if there is hope and progress towards a goal of a championship someday. I'd much rather see Hassan Whiteside suck than Kwame Brown suck.
I've just about lost interest. Wake me up next offseason. xam14
I checked the website and his jersey isn't available. Don't keep us waiting bababooey2yall
Another solid Doug Collins move. Looks like we're stuck with Iggy though...hopefully a team will bite on the Olympic hype. tomficara
xam14:XACTLY: I believe when DC came out of June 28th with two #1's in Harkless and Moultrie, he more or less labeled them "young and athletic" and he got the "upside bug" out of his system...I do feel in his quest for "pieces", he really thinks he can win with this piecemeal cast. The fear factor to me is just not there...DC continues to surround himself with veterans that simply don't float a boat. bearsfriend
Shaler Halimon is in contract talks as we speak. watsonmr
yeah the sixers should fill their final few spots with youth. a lot of undrafted guys have done well in summer leagues, so why not go after their potential? i think the sixers plan is to have the most ridiculous names in the nab: jrue, thaddeus, kwami, and now royal ivey HDemetriou
Winning a few more games and eaking into the playoff should not be the goal. Lose a few more and is a better alternative. I dont thinlk it will make a differnece to frees agents.
I listened to Thorn on WIP this am, and no mention of Vucevic. Its like he's not in the team anymore. Could he be the center they move, with Thad's big contrat? I still think a trade is coming. At least I hooe so. xam14
I don't get what this team is doing. We are collecting short-term and expiring contracts and getting "longer" and more "athletic" in the process. No significant moves in terms of FA's and we are being told this is all a plan for the 2013-2014 class of free agents. Fine. Believe that if you want. The problem is that the NBA favors a handful of "elites" - Celtics, Lakers, Spurs, Bulls, Heat, Thunder (this is the recent addition) and if Stern had his way the Knicks would also be relevant. What does that mean for the rest of us that follow another team? We are SOL. I have been a Sixers fan since Julius Erving. I still have my Doctor's last House Call scrubs from his last game in Indianapolis. I loved the Collins hire and I am glad they finally have an owner who at least appears to want to spend money. The problem is this team looks like it will win fewer than half of its games as presently constructed. As such it will be a tough sell to get any of the big-time FA's to sign here next year. I want to be optimistic but the way the league is run now coupled with some of these moves make me think the Sixers will continue to be irrelevant. coloradoeagle
Why don't they just resign Allen Iverson? drtyhrry
I can't believe there are 5 pages of comments on this move. Ssteve115
WOW! 86 comments already on the signing of the 13th man; Harris and Aron have found a way to get the fan base excited. What's that? Most of them are confused and angry, wondering if there really is or ever was a plan for this off-season other than Collins doing color work on the Olympics! The Ivey signing is what it is: a back up veteran point guard who can defend, but the 13th man is NEVER a locker room leader, so forget that idea. For anyone who wants Doug Collins as General Manager, he clearly engineered the trade for Hawes, who now is going to be turned into a power forward, he clearly pushed for getting rid of Speights for two useless second round picks, although one wonders whether he wanted Sam Young at the trade dealine, he clearly pushed for signing Kwame Brown and Royal Ivey, getting rid of the player, Meeks, for whom he traded Ivey, he clearly pushed for drafting Vucevic who is now a Soviet style non-person, and he pushed for drafting Harkless and Moultrie, who better darn well turn out to be serious ballers. The one plus was the drafting of Lavoy Allen. To be honest, I am completely mystified by this off-season and I do not believe their line that all will be well in 2013. Thorn will be gone this year for sure, Collins most likely will quit after this season, and then Harris and Aron will sell the team, and a disillusioned and dwindling fan base will not care. chuckw
Of course the NBA wants the Knicks and Lakers to do well. They are the two biggest markets in the US. However, Knicks management is as brutal as the 76ers. The NBA cannot control the poor management decisions that a team makes. Somehow, Danny Ainge, Mitch Kupchak and Pat Reilly figure out how to work within the salary cap and add superstars to their rosters. Kobe and Howard is just an updated version of Kobe and Shaq. The Lakers will do whatever they have to do; the 76ers won't. The Heat figured out how to add Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis to an already stacked team. Their management likes championships. Again, send a message to 76ers management by not spending your hard earned money on an organization not committed to bringing the fans a championship. It's been 29 years and will most certainly hit 30. syddan26
For some reason some of my comments aren't going through tonight.
Chuck: I have to agree with a lot of your points especially in regards to Vuc who was "Doug's guy" from before the draft. He fell in love with his basketball IQ and ability to knock down a shot, but what he couldn't see in his workouts was that the kid was uber soft and although he was 7 ft attacked the rim like he was 6 ft and seemed lost on defense. Whether or not Vuc turns a corner it seems very hard to get out of Coach Collins doghouse, just ask Mo Speights. I am really confused with the premise that Brown is your starting center and Hawes will somehow play the four, but I guess this is what the team did a lot of the times with Brand and Hawes. I am not as much of a Brown hater as some as I did watch him play a bunch the last couple years and he does play physical and will give the team some size and toughness.
Bears: Hear your point about Faried and there are a bunch of guys who are lighting up summer league including Terrence Jones. This years draft class is impressing in summer league and it seems like there are some definite players. I was away from the board for a few days and am wondering why there wasn't more of an uproar or mention in the press about Lavoy's pathetic performance in Orlando and the fact he was so out of shape. I hope the money hasn't gotten to the kid, but he played with no sense of urgency almost as if it to say I already proved my value. What he should have been doing is showing the front office and coaching staff that the power forward job should be his. Really disappointing and I hope he gets in shape this summer. Mattb

I like the Young & Wright picks, you get instant offense with two potential three point shooters both over .330. The Sixers never had 2 possible 3 three point shooters. Also I like the size, Harkless 6'8, Wright 6'8(probably guarded LeBron a lot), Moultrie 6'11, Young 6'7, Vuc 7'0, Hawes 7'0, Brown 6'10. That's some length. Micknasty
I agree with Combo here. Royal adds toughness to the PG backup (though Turner will get most minutes Jrue doesn't get). This isn't our team long-term, just next season. There was nobody out there that DC or Thorn really wanted this offseason, if there was they'd be signed for more years. Nick Young and Dorrell Wright could be try-before-you-buy players, but they aren't committing long-term until they feel set with whatever main players they pursue.
What they are doing here is trying to win now and build for the future at the same time. The reason for winning now (even if a first and out in playoffs) is to get fans in those seats. Build a stable audience. I'm confident next summer we will see some home-run moves. They will have to do something about Iguodala (1 year left) next summer and go after who they truly want (that's available). They're testing some players to see if they're worth bringing back (N Young, Wright being 2). Royal is DC's comfort player over an unknown. There are already enough unknowns for DC's liking. He needs players he can go to when others aren't bringing it. joecooler2u
Bear - I agree - what we need is a fast penetrate drive and dish guy, not a hang at the 3 point line guy. This and the Brown move are, to put it bluntly - terrible. I'd rather have draft bust Milicic - at least he can rebound and block shots. Young and Wright were good moves - downhill after that 7mel11

Holliday-PG, Turner-SG, Iggy-SF, Thad-PF, Hawes-C. Bench--Ivey, Nick Young-Guards, Harkless, Moultrie, Allen-Forwards, Vuc and Kwame Brown-Centers. That would be 12 man roster. Am I missing anyone? Royal Ivey is barely even an NBA player much less a guy that should be a backup for a guy that still has a Lot to learn about the PG position. I think this team will be worse defensively with N Young and Wright. And now with the announcement that Hawes will start at the 4 and Brown at the 5 the Sixers become the worst pick and roll defense team in the East. But, at least after going 36-46 they'll have "cap flexibility" Ugh. spenner

We all love readibg bear's comments ... but, I am seriously rooting against Royce White so that I don't have to read his name as many times as I have read Faried's. Copper34
Did the coach really say he expected to start Brown and Hawes as center and power forward? Hawes is expected to guard the new style 7' pf's with agility?
I'd like to see a lightning quick, pass first, point guard, as well. jsa
There is no player we can sighn or trade for to make this team a contender this year? Trade Iggy for Al Jefferson and we are a contender! MikeD.
