NCAA basketball scores: Defending champion Louisville holds off Charleston, 70-48

Last season's NCAA champion Louisville got off to a shaky start, but the Cardinals eventually breezed past Charleston 70-48. Russ Smith had 21 for Louisville, including 11 points in the final seven minutes to close out the Cougars.

Canyon Berry was the only Charleston scorer in double figures, notching 10 points on four of nine shooting. For Louisville, junior college transfer Chris Jones scored 12 points and tallied five assists in his turn as the starting point guard.

The Cardinals shot just 38 percent in the game, including 22 percent from the three-point line.  They were playing without their best shooter, Luke Hancock, who sat with a nagging Achilles injury.
