Martin Brodeur will start Devils opener, says coach
Martin Brodeur will be the New Jersey Devils starting goaltender when the team opens the 2013-14 regular season against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Oct. 3, head coach Pete Deboer confirmed on Tuesday morning.
Obviously, this announcement would have been a formality in previous seasons. Brodeur is arguably one of the greatest goaltenders to ever play in the NHL and has been the most consistent member of the Devils roster since the mid-90s. However, New Jersey acquired highly touted goaltender Cory Schneider this summer from the Vancouver Canucks. While it's expected that the two goaltenders will split time, Schneider is obviously considered the goaltender of the future.
While the future is still -- at least -- one season away, many are looking toward it, especially when projecting Brodeur's potential this season and the end of his phenomenal career.
