Pennant odds, World Series betting, taking shape in September
The five playoff teams in the National League are pretty much set heading into the final weeks of the regular season, but nine teams still have a shot at paying out on the AL Pennant futures at the sportsbooks right now with key series coming up this weekend.
The Braves, Dodgers, Cardinals, Pirates, and Reds are going to be the five playoff teams in the National League this fall barring a big collapse or a late surge by a team like the Nationals, but over in the American League the Red Sox, Tigers, Athletics, Rangers, Rays, Orioles, Yankees, Indians, and Royals remain in contention this week.
The next week will have a major impact on which teams climb odds to win the World Series listings and which teams fall off the lists altogether.
Kansas City, though, can help itself in the Wild Card race this weekend with a strong performance on the road against Detroit. The Royals and Tigers have already met 16 times this season, with Kansas City holding the slight edge at 9-7 on the MLB odds at the sportsbooks.
The OVER/UNDER went 6-10 for totals bettors over those 16 games.
Contenders will clash in two other American League series this weekend as well, with Boston hosting New York at Fenway Park, and Oakland playing the Rangers in Texas.
The Red Sox, comfortably atop the AL East standings this week, are 10-6 against rival New York so far this season, winning three of four games between the teams last weekend at Yankee Stadium.
The OVER has paid out in four of the last five games between Boston and New York, with the OVER/UNDER 9-7 between them this season.
Oakland and Texas are still battling for the AL West title, with the Athletics only 7-9 against the Rangers so far in 2013 and the UNDER paying out for totals bettors in four of their last five meetings. The Rangers have managed to win four of their seven games at home against the A's this year, with the OVER/UNDER 3-3-1 in those games.
The Indians are in Chicago to play the White Sox this weekend, while the Orioles are on the road in Toronto. Tampa Bay has a road series in Minnesota starting on Friday.
