MLB Playoff Odds Sept. 9: Yankees struggle, Pirates swept
Baseball's regular season is down to the final three weeks, and contenders for the five playoff spots in each league are trying to secure there spot. Some teams have nearly clinched their post-season bid, while others are jockeying for position or hoping to keep the dream alive. We'll be tracking these odds from here on out, until we know the answer to all the playoff questions in each league.
The AL East and Central are nearly wrapped up barring disaster, but the AL West and both Wild Card bids are more undecided at this early September stage:
The Red Sox and Tigers both look to have playoff spots all but wrapped up, with the Athletics and Rangers close behind. Texas and Oakland are still battling for the AL West, with the loser likely grabbing one of the Wild Card spot, leaving the other wild card to be fought over by one-third of the American League.
The five playoff teams in the NL have distanced themselves from the rest of the pack, but the NL Central and both Wild Card spots are still close races.
The Cardinals currently lead the NL Central, but the Pirates and the Reds both trail by 1 1/2 games. The winner of the division gets a guaranteed five-game series, while the other two will likely play in the Wild Card game.
