NFL training camp roundup: Fewer injuries around the league on Saturday
Unlike Friday, not all 32 teams were in practice on Saturday, but there was plenty of note from those that were. Catch up below:
Buffalo Bills - Quarterback Kevin Kolb suffered an injury on Saturday when he "bumped his knee," slipping on a rubber mat. Kolb is classified as day-to-day and the severity of the injury is unknown. That said, Kolb is locked in a quarterback battle with E.J. Manuel, so any missed time could be significantly detrimental.
Miami Dolphins - The Dolphins did not have practice on Saturday.
New York Jets - Mark Sanchez was booed during a scrimmage on Saturday. Sanchez, who is competing with rookie Geno Smith for the starting quarterback job, threw an interception and was promptly booed by the crowd. Following that, he was laughed at when he stumbled -- untouched -- and fell to the ground while dropping back. Rough day and a tough crowd.
Houston Texans - The Texans did not have practice on Saturday.
Indianapolis Colts - The Colts did not have practice on Saturday.
Jacksonville Jaguars - The Jaguars still have not decided on a starting quarterback, and neither Blaine Gabbert nor Chad Henne did anything to distinguish themselves during Saturday's scrimmage. Gabbert threw for two touchdowns in goal line drills but had a few bad passes, while Henne threw for one touchdown, but was sacked five times.
Tennessee Titans - The Titans simulated a mock game on Saturday at LP Field, in front of about 5,000 season ticket holders. They had an actual halftime and everything. Quarterback Jake Locker started off 3-for-8, which was disappointing, but went 6-for-7 in a two-minute drive before piking the ball to set up a field goal try near the end. All in all, it was a productive day for Tennessee.
Baltimore Ravens - The Ravens did not have practice on Saturday.
Cincinnati Bengals - The Bengals did not have practice on Saturday.
Cleveland Browns - Running back Trent Richardson was absent for another practice on Saturday. Richardson has a bruised shin and should be back on Monday, but any missed time is worrying for the young running back with injury concerns so early in his career.
Pittsburgh Steelers - The Steelers are getting physical early in training camp. With many new young players, head coach Mike Tomlin is upping the amount of contact that would usually be required. The Steelers have been noted as having an aging defense in recent years, and there's been a clear push for getting young guys in over the past two seasons, so the strategy seems to make sense, barring the increased risk of injury.
Kansas City Chiefs - The Chiefs' offense was firing on all cylinders on Saturday. Quarterback Alex Smith started things off the right way by finding wide receiver Dexter McCluster on the first play of the day deep for a touchdown. Backup quarterback Chase Daniel also hit Travis Kelce for a touchdown later in practice.
Oakland Raiders - The defense wore the silver jerseys in practice on Saturday, due to generally getting the best of the offense in previous days, according to head coach Dennis Allen. It was a precursor to a bad day for the offense, in which receivers dropped multiple passes and the quarterbacks didn't look much better.
Dallas Cowboys - The Cowboys did not have practice on Saturday.
New York Giants - Rookie quarterback Ryan Nassib is receiving a lot of attention. He's the backup, and isn't going to challenge Eli Manning for the starting role anytime soon, but remains an intriguing prospect nonetheless. Unfortunately, he threw two interceptions on Saturday while running a hurry-up offense, getting picked off by cornerback Laron Scott and linebacker Mark Herzlich.
Philadelphia Eagles - The Eagles did not have practice on Saturday.
Washington Redskins - Robert Griffin III looked good on the day, completing 13 of 17 passes, capping off a good week of practices. Cornerback DeAngelo Hall once again missed practice due to his sprained right ankle and is day-to-day at this point. Left tackle Trent Williams practiced despite a sprained left wrist.
Atlanta Falcons - The Falcons did not have practice on Saturday.
Carolina Panthers - Charles Johnson and Domenik Hixon, who were injured during Friday's practice, sat out on Saturday, along with starting left guard Amini Silatolu. Johnson had a back strain, Hixon was suffering from leg cramps and Silatolu had a strained groin.
New Orleans Saints - Linebacker Junior Galette is turning heads in camp, and had two sacks and almost had a third in scrimmage on Saturday. Galette is hoping to make an impression and earn playing time this season, and has been all over the place in camp. The second- and third-team offense struggled on Saturday as well.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Wide receiver Vincent Jackson was absent from camp, but unlike most of the news we've been hearing around the league of late, he did not miss for injury. Jackson's wife was giving birth, so he was excused Saturday, and Chris Owusu took his place. He caught a 57-yard touchdown pass from Josh Freeman during the session.
Detroit Lions - Detroit is shuffling the offensive line a bit, and on Saturday, the right side of the offensive line say Jake Scott at guard and Jason Fox at tackle. Rookie Larry Warford did get some time at the guard spot, though, but had trouble dealing with Ndamukong Suh. The Lions need to get their line settled with quarterback Matthew Stafford being somewhat injury-prone in the past.
Green Bay Packers - It's all about the kickers for the Packers, who have just about every other position on the roster settled. Mason Crosby struggled mightily last season, which prompted Green Bay to bring in Giorgio Tavecchio to compete during training camp. On Saturday, Crosby struggled in an extensive field-goal session and Tavecchio may have gotten a leg-up on him in the competition for the first time.
Minnesota Vikings - The Vikings had a standard practice in front of a big crowd on Saturday, though there was little of note. The starting offense played well against the starting defense, and special teams looked particularly sharp.
Arizona Cardinals - John Abraham is the newest addition in Arizona, but he wasn't working with the first team during Saturday's practice. That was Sam Acho, who was in on nickel packages while Abraham spent time with the second team. It could be due to him being so new to the team, but it's interesting nonetheless.
Seattle Seahawks - The Seahawks did not have practice on Saturday
San Francisco 49ers - The 49ers did not have practice on Saturday.
St. Louis Rams - The rookies got to experience the Edward Jones Dome for the first time on Saturday. Rookies T.J. McDonald and Tavon Austin enjoyed the experience playing in front of the fans indoors, and both were happy with their performances in the standard practice for the day.
