The Calgary Flames have selected first round pick Sean Monahan to a three-year entry level contract. The deal will pay Monahan a base salary of $832,500 per year in the NHL or $70,000 in the AHL. Monahan's signing bonus will pay him $92,500 each year and he has performance bonuses that could push his contract to $1,775,000 per year.

Calgary selected Monahan sixth overall in the 2013 NHL Draft. The 19-year-old has drawn praise for his cerebral play and good defensive play, to go along with his work in the offensive zone. Many pundits at the NHL Draft said that he could play in the NHL next season and at 6'2'', 186 lbs., Monahan has room to fill out and develop into an even better power forward in the coming years.

Monahan tallied 78 points in just 58 games last season for the Ottawa 67's in the OHL, an amazing feat considering the 67's were awful and won just 16 games of out 68. The center's great year came on the heels of another 78-point season in 2011-12 and a tour with the Canada U-18 National Team at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.
