MLB trade rumor roundup: Morneau on the block, Yankees inquire on Headley, 80 percent chance Garza is moved
Hang in there, folks. Just one more day to go before real baseball returns to our lives once more. Here's a quick roundup of Wednesday's trade rumors to keep your baseball appetite sated:
Twins make Morneau available, but not Perkins
While Joe Mauer is likely to hang around in the twin cities a few years longer, Minnesota's other star appears to be on his way out. The Twins have reportedly made first baseman Justin Morneau available on the trade market, and the Yankees, Pirates, and Rays are believed to be possible landing spots for the Canadian. The last several years have been a roller coaster for Morneau -- battling his way back from a serious head injury -- and it's likely that his numbers will never return to their MVP levels. He still has a solid glove at the cold corner, however, and his offensive production is right around average, so he could be a solid pick-up for a team like the Yankees, who are just in need of a guy to save them from having to use Lyle Overbay every day. Several clubs are also interested in the Twins' All-Star closer, Glen Perkins, but the club is telling teams that the southpaw is not for sale.
Padres spurn Yankees' inquiry into Headley
The New York Yankees are searching far and wide for some help on the infield corners, but may have to cross San Diego off their list. The club recently inquired into Padres third baseman Chase Headley -- whom New York showed a lot of interest in over the winter -- but were told by San Diego that there is no trade to be made for the switch-hitter. The Padres have gone back and forth on the idea of keeping Headley long-term vs. sending him away for prospects, so there's a chance he'll become available again, but it doesn't look like it'll happen between now and July 31. The Yankees are still rumored to have their sights set on guys like Phillies infielder Michael Young, so they're not without other options.
Garza's trade chances up to 80 percent
