PHOENIX — Michael Saunders and Jeanmar Gomez, removed from the Phillies' roster earlier this week, were placed on release waivers Saturday and will officially be released Sunday, the team said.

Saunders and Gomez can sign with any club. The Phillies are responsible for the remainder of their salaries, minus a pro-rated portion of the major-league minimum, should they sign elsewhere. That amounts to about $4.5 million for Saunders and $2 million for Gomez.

It will not be a shock to see Saunders land on someone else's roster. He has not produced in the last calendar year, but he had a strong first half in 2016, and another team could make a low-risk wager on him. Gomez may have to settle for a minor-league contract.

The Phillies designated both players for assignment last Tuesday and had seven days to either trade, waive, or release them.
