Phillies prospect Jesen Therrien now a free agent

Jesen Therrien, who will likely miss the entire 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, became a free agent Monday evening when the team removed the reliever from the 40-man roster.

The Phillies also made Pedro Florimon a free agent and activated Zach Eflin, Jerad Eickhoff, and Vince Velasquez from the 60-day disabled list in a bit of housekeeping as free agency began.

Therrien, a hard-throwing righthander, showed some promise last season after joining the team at the end of July. It is possible that the Phillies could re-sign Therrien and Florimon to minor-league deals and have them rehab  with the team before rejoining the Phillies  in 2019.  Therrien, 24, registered a 8.35 ERA before being shut down in early September with an ulnar collateral ligament injury. The surgery was performed in the final week of the season by  James Andrews.

“It’s all good,” Therrien said after the surgery. “I’ll come back stronger.”

The 30-year-old Florimon seemed to be playing himself into competition for a utility role next season before dislocating his ankle in a gruesome baserunning play in September.
