Cameron Rupp was a sophomore in college when he logged onto the SPCA's website and picked out the dog he wanted to adopt.

"I said I want that dog. I went in and took her home that day," Rupp said. "She's nine years old now. It took her a while for my mom to get used to her. My mom was not such a huge dog person and the dog ended up being put on her when I went away all the time. Sure enough, that dog is everyone's at home. They all love her."

The Phillies catcher will return the favor to the SPCA on Thursday night when he hosts Ruppapalooza at Morgan's Pier. The event — which costs $35 — will feature Rupp and his teammates as bartenders and dogs from the Pennsylvania SPCA will be available for on-site adoption. Tyler Reeve, a country-music songwriter, will perform. All proceeds benefit the Pennsylvania SPCA.

"10 years later, here I am helping support these little puppies and helping them find a home," Rupp said. "Everyone needs a home. It's a man's best friend."

Rupp owns three dogs. Frito, a boxer-pitbull mix, is the one he adopted in college. He has since added Chief, an Italian Mastiff, and Beaux, a lab.

"There's so many different breeds and a lot of breeds are looked at in certain ways. You don't know a dog until you get up and meet it firsthand," Rupp said. "They really are man's best friend and they all deserve a home just like any animal and an owner that loves them and takes care of them and wants to be around them. Because all these guys want is someone to play with."
