Carlos Ruiz pitched last night for the Seattle Mariners - and he pitched well

Seattle got pounded so badly by Minnesota that the former Phillies star came in as a relief pitcher.

Seattle Mariners catcher Carlos Ruiz, a former Philadelphia Phillies fan favorite, was called to pitch in the eighth inning of Tuesday night’s baseball game against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

You know it's going to be a good day when you wake up and there is video of Carlos Ruiz on the mound. And I mean as a pitcher, not a catcher visiting a pitcher.

To what do we owe this honor? The Mariners' 20-7 loss to the Twins last night. Seattle got pounded so badly that Ruiz came in as a reliever.

You can find the full video over at MLB.com. Here's a highlight of Chooch striking out Minnesota's Kennys Vargas:

  1. That's a front-door sinker, a pitch Ruiz called for Roy Halladay only about a billion times.

  2. It's perfectly located with late movement, catching the inside corner of the plate.

  3. That's not Tuffy Gosewisch catching. But, hey, the world isn't perfect.

Editor's note: We'd post the video here, but Major League Baseball refuses to let the video clip be embedded on websites beyond its own, because it's so convinced that's a great way to grow interest in the game.
