Lousy pitching and poor hitting is what went wrong.

The Phillies couldn't hit their way out of a wet paper bag particularly in the first half of the season.

They had bad coaching. Anyone could see that.

o other g.m. in baseball has acquired less good young players over past 4 years than Clueless Rube -- because Rube has added exactly ZERO good young players to the orgnaization since taking over after 2008...while spending the highest budget in the league, Clueless Rube re-signed one quality player in the organization (Hamels) and added ZERO good young players from outside the organization..indeed 2 or 3 players whom he gave away for free (Brandon Moss and Vogelsong, Grilli) are better than all but maybe 6 players on the Phils roster

While spending over $175 million on a .500 team, castoffs like Brandon Moss and Ibanez pretty much outproduced whole Phils team --Cluless Rubes knows less about evaluating players and talent than a monkey throwing darts

Besides the terrible hitting, the injuries, and the age of the core players, the Phillies have lost that hunger to win. Look at what the A's just did to win their division; I haven't seen the Phillies play that way since 2008. Since then they've played like winning was theirs by right, but they just don't have it any more.

I blame the Phillies' problems this year on three things - 1. Injuries 2. The failure by Ruben Amaro to bring in younger and more talented players 3. Not having enough depth at key positions, especially the infield and middle relief.

Another opinion: The writing on this site had taken a drastic turn downward since the Old Guard retired or were forced to leave the scene. Sending just one reporter on road trips is cheap for an old line original NL franchise, is it not? I got more pertinent and telling info from the posters here such as Dull, Bearsfriend, Mark1npt, 24sDad, Dull and others more so then the paid professionals that supposedly cover this team! And as informative as those folks are, (and a pleasure to read their thoughtes everyday!), it's the job of the Brookovers, Gelbs, Murphy's and Lawrences to get the job done right. And yes, they do come across as lapdogs for this franchise, rather then the knowledgable and objective reporters they were hired to be. We demand real professional baseball writers who tell the truth and I don't think we got that this year.

The team can wait for another day and post........

Dull, you are a great poster, but I meant to mention you just once! Add to the mix the El Zorro's, the Dudeskins (stay thirsty my well spoken friend!) and our more rational minded and thoughtful posters! :)

When everyone considers the huge payroll and the unrealistic expectations, the season was a disappointment. Still, a .500 record isn't THAT bad. It's not a losing season. In fact, when you consider that we spent 1/2 the year depending on Luna, Fontenot, Schneider, etc., a .500 season is actually an accomplishment.
