Victorino wins Gold Glove

POSTED: Wednesday, November 10, 2010, 3:49 PM

Centerfielder Shane Victorino won his third consecutive Gold Glove award today.

Victorino is now the sixth Phillie to have won at least three Gold Gloves, joining Mike Schmidt (10), Garry Maddox (8), Manny Trillo (3), Scott Rolen (3) and Jimmy Rollins (3).

Victorino and Maddox are the only two outfielders in club history to have won at least three awards and Schmidt, Maddox, Rollins and Victorino are the only four Phillies to have won Gold Gloves in at least three consecutive seasons.

In 143 games for the Phillies this past season, Victorino, 29, posted a .995 fielding percentage, committing only two errors in 373 total chances. He finished tied for the NL lead in outfield assists with 11, tops among all NL center fielders, and ranked second in double plays (4).

Victorino also earns a $50,000 bonus from an incentive clause in his contract.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the managers and coaches as one of the top defensive players in the league along with all the other deserving candidates,” Victorino said in a statement. “I take a lot of pride in my defense and this award means a lot to me.”

Former Phillies Scott Rolen and Michael Bourn also won awards. It was Rolen's eighth Gold Glove, coming for his third team. Bourn is a first-time winner.

Here is the rudndown of the winners:

C Yadier Molina, Cardinals
1B Albert Pujols, Cardinals
2B Brandon Phillips, Reds
SS Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies
3B Scott Rolen, Reds
OF Carlos Gonzalez, Rockies
OF Michael Bourn, Astros
OF Shane Victorino, Phillies
P Bronson Arroyo, Reds

Shane had had a nice year. Shame he could"t hold the ball against the Giants which together with Raul's blunder may have cost the Phillies going to the Series in spite of their failure to hit! Experts always say -Pitching and defense wins....

I like the flying Hawaian---now if he could only learn to drag bunt for hits--with his speed its a no brainer

Hello Dave and all Phillie Fans

I have a dream Phillies team for next year
it is thought out and less expensive than this years
and it will definetelly be the best team in the majors.

    1. Trade ryan howard and his 20 mil (propably red sox)
    2. Trade Joe Blanton and his 8 mil most teams will take
him. I would also trade Raul Ibanez but I am realistic
no one would take him. These 2 trades save us 28 mil
and net us some prospects. Add the 28 mil to the 15 mil
from the increase in ticket prices we got 43 mil.
Ok now lets spent it. Everyone knows in order to win
in baseball you need pitching and defense hitting is last.

OUR NEW TEAM (think before you call me crazy)

    1. First base Chase utley (much better fielder than Howard)
    2. Second base Placido Polanco is a better fielder than Utley
    3. shortstop the same j-roll
    4. Third base Adrie Beltre is one of the best fielders in baseball
and a much better power bat from the right side than werth.
    5. Right field is a platoon (dominic brown and ben francisco)
I think both of them start an outfield position the following year
    6. Center and left field stays the same.

Of the 43 mil we only spend around 10 for beltre for a 3 yesar deal which he wants. I would spend around 8 mill for the 2 top left hand relievers available to strengthen the bullpen their names escape me
but both were great against left handers. Ok we have 25 left I know for sure we can get cliff leee for less than that .

Ok phillie fans what do you think?

Best rotation in majors? maybe all time in baseball?
Best defense? all infielders all stars and shane in outfield
terrific bullpen, much better balanced offense?
100 wins no doubt? am i crazy? do we order world series tickets now?

Forget Polanco, where is the outrage about utley, hes been the best 2B in the league for the last five seasons and has no gold gloves to show for it, i hope some of the dinosaur writers dont hold that against him when its time to induct him into the coop.
    Rob Neyer sucks

Victorino came awfully close to making a Willy Mays catch that would have changed the outcome of the Giants series. Close but no cigar.

I think Victorino makes easy plays into hard dramatic ones that make him look like a better fielder sometimes. Could be a problem when his speed isn't there anymore. Just my opinion. The Rolen vote surprised me, but these things happen. Remember Abreu.

POLANCO WAS ROBBED. Highest fielding percentage, fewest errors, and highest range factor.

Congratulations go out to Shane what a great player he is. Sad that Carlos wasn't part of this award. The man catches for two no-hitters and is considered Mr. Clutch in the playoffs, what are we missing here?

The Gold Glove is a joke, maybe I saw the only errors Rolen made all year, but he looked less than average, and all I heard was how he was still injured, always an excuse.
Why is the outfield lumped together and voted ledft-center-right? The positions are vastly different and demand different skill sets ...

Rolen is junk, loved watching him flail and K all series long. Still hate that guy with a passion! Polanco is 100x's better fielder even if he's a true 2nd baseman. Chooch needs to start getting consideration at this point for not just gold glove but the best overall catcher in the league. Calls a great game, never lets anything get by him, plays 80% of the games all year and he cuaght a perfect game and a no-no. Utley and Howard need to improve their fielding, especially if they contineu to not hit. Pay me $125mm and I'll be hoover vacum at 1st....and won't go down with a bat on my shoulder to end the season. Still burns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The two Reds on the list were instrumental in getting the Phillies to the next round....with their gloves.

Congrats to Shane - he's a pleasure to watch in the field, plus his arm gets a lot of respect. Anybody notice that Chase won the Silver Slugger? Congrats to him too, although I think that was more for name recognition than performance. Rickey Weeks probably should have won. And in the AL they must have pulled Jeter's name out of a hat for the Gold Glove.

Rolen can hold the Gold Glove award while he's watching the replay of his marvelous effort in the NLDS. And he should keep some Imodium handy while doing it.

This is how the All-Stars should be selected, by the managers and coaches. If it were done this way we wouldn't be selecting players who were on the disabled list most of the year. The way things are now, players get selected to the All-Star games based on their production from the previous year, not the current year. This is what makes winning a Gold Glove so special, it is voted by your peers, not some 10 year old with a hundred ballots and a pencil to punch out his selections as he stuffs cotton candy in his face between innings.

He would have had a forever platinum glove had he made a Mays like catch on that ball in game 6. Willie had more room to roam; Shane ran out of room at the wall.

Polanco and Chooch were ROBBED! Polanco's numbers were better than the other 3rd base candidates, and he played just as injured all year as Rolen. Really...Rolen?! C'mon! And I really thought Chooch had the kind of year to beat Molina. Ruiz gets no respect, which is sad.

But, I'm really happy for Shane!! Congrats to the Flyin' Hawaiian!

Congratulations Shane !!!!!!!!!! He gets a great jump on the ball, covers a tremendous amount of ground, and almost always he breaks in the right direction. And when he doesn't, he out runs the ball or runs-the-ball-down. He should be leadoff the entire year, with Jimmy next.

Victorino deserves it. He made some great plays this year. Your right SanFran, Placido was unbelievable at third base. Most reliable of the entire infield.

We traded Bourn for Eric Bruntlett and Brad Lidge. We can thank that trade for being a huge part of winning the World Series.

Who did we trade Bourn for? I remember he was fast and good with the glove, but wasn't his batting average pretty low?
