After a 4-3 victory Tuesday that gave the Phillies their first three-game winning streak of 2012, Vance Worley dampened the mood. He said he's been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday because of elbow soreness.

Kyle Kendrick will start for Worley in the series opener against Chicago. Kendrick has pitched only one inning in the previous 11 days and could be severely limited in how deep he could throw.

He made three starts for Cliff Lee while the lefthander was disabled, and the Phillies lost all three.

The Phillies have not made a determination whether Worley will need to go on the disabled list but initiated preparations for such a move. A team source said lefthander Joe Savery would travel with the club to Chicago and could be added to the roster if a Wednesday examination reveals a larger problem in Worley's elbow.

It's potentially a huge blow to a Phillies team that has relied heavily on its starting pitching to crawl to an 18-19 record. Worley has a 3.07 ERA in seven starts with 45 strikeouts in 44 innings. He finished third in rookie of the year voting a season ago.

His last outing was a 7-3 victory Friday over San Diego in which he fanned nine in six innings while allowing three runs. The Phillies are 4-3 in games started by Worley this season.
