Brett Myers last night delivered the third shutout of his career and his first since May 20, 2004.

The Phillies tried to land CC Sabathia before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but came up empty.

They probably could have squeezed him into their rotation somewhere.

Sabathia ia 7-0 with a 1.40 ERA in seven starts since the all-star break. He is making a case for National League MVP and Cy Young. But interestingly, Brett Myers has been nearly as effective since he rejoined the rotation after his four-start stint in the minors. He is 3-1 with a 1.94 ERA in six starts since the break.

That includes last night's 4-0 shutout over the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park.

Sabathia and Myers have been two of the four most effective starting pitchers in baseball since the break (with a minimum of 25 innings pitched):

  • CC Sabathia: 7-0, 1.40 ERA, seven starts.
  • Randy Johnson: 4-2, 1.56 ERA, six starts.
  • Brandon Webb: 5-0, 1.76 ERA, six starts.
  • Brett Myers: 3-1, 1.94 ERA, six starts.

"It's a big acquisition that didn't have to happen" in a trade, centerfielder Shane Victorino said of Myers' return. "You didn't have to give up the farm system to go get a guy."

Myers just needs to continue to pitch like that because the offense hasn't been providing anybody much run support. The Phillies had nine hits last night, which was their most since they had 10 hits Aug. 11 in the first game of their seven-game road trip through Los Angeles and San Diego. They haven't had more than 10 hits since they had 11 hits against the Nationals on July 31.

The Phillies have won four of their last five, but have hit just .219 and scored just 15 runs (3.0 runs per game) in that stretch.

But the fact that Myers is pitching better (even though two of those six starts have come against the horrendous Nationals) is a good sign. Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer and Myers looks like a fairly formidable trio should the Phillies make the playoffs again. But they've got to start hitting, too.

*

In the Phillies Notebook: Pedro Feliz is back, David Ross is headed elsewhere, Hamels won't be facing the Mets next week and more.

Hmmm. I reread Todd's post and I don't see the words "getting myers is almost the same" anywhere. What it does say is that since the AS break, Myers has been nearly as effective, and the stats back that up. Does anyone think Myers is the equivalent of Sabathia? Nope. Is that hard to understand?

P.S. Todd you're such a homer...it's obvious that the philthies blew there chance on getting a true ace....but as far as saying that getting myers is almost the same...is hilarious...maybe you should write for a comedy blog.

its silly to compare the two. Brett pitched 2 of his games against AAA Nationals team. There is NO comparison. And on another front Charlie was an IDIOT tonight to leave Moyer in. 100+ pitches and losing it in the 6th when no reliever pitched last night. Big mistake. And Jimmy needs to sit for a day or so. Bring up Donald after the olympics and sit Jimmy for a bit to get his head straight because this booing is getting to him. And Howard? Maybe it is time to sit him against lefthanders. I don't know what to do with him becuase he has been so inept this month its silly. This team is so frustrating and there's no way we're beating the mets this year. We look more like last year's mets and they act like we did last year.

Totally agree with Clinton. You could plug almost any other cleanup-hitter in Howard's spot and he would have great RBI numbers (although I agree. less HR's.) He looks embarrassingly-ridiculous up there for most of this season and much of last season. He is in his prime years...he should be getting better, not obviously much worse. I really liked Howard his first two years and even some last year, but it is getting very difficult to support him as a player. I think he is a nice young guy and in many ways doesn't deserve his awful performanes game after game. However, baseball ability-wise, he is below-average in everything except power.

Sorry all you Howard supporters, but he is just aweful! I know he has some decent HR and RBI numbers, but he isnt going to get 'his numbers' this year unless he goes on a big time tear the rest of the year. As much as I hope he does, I just dont see it happening. I think any decent clean up hitter put in this lineup would have just about Howards RBI numbers so far, maybe a few less HR. He isnt doing anything special this year, and really he is getting worse each year it seems, both offensively and defensively....its sad!

We can all agree, that was pitiful. No excuse for not sweeping that team. And wasting another fine outing from Jamie Moyer. Hey, I know Chase threw that ball wide to first, but I give half that run to Howard, who failwed to stop the ball from getting past him. Hey, you're already off the bag, co catch the ball! A little extra effort there saves a run. Have these guys have packed it in mentally?

J-roll is no hall of famer, he barely bats .290 in his best years. His power numbers may never be as good as they have been in the past couple years. Maybe when the year is over and J-roll has time to reflect on it, maybe he will realize he had a bad year and will come out next year gunning to have 2007 numbers and not 2008. Has anybody noticed how the Mets handled Mike Pelfrey? To bad the Phils can learn from the Mets about brining up a young stud pitcher. He struggled early on, but they let him tough it out and learn in the bigs, and now he is pitching great! Phils cant hit once again 2nite! Man they S U C K B A L L S!!!!!!

Just for kicks, certain nay-sayers on here are giving Myers less than his fair share of credit because he did what he is supposed to do against a bad team. However, he had made six starts since his return, and 3 against .500+ teams. And he pitched well in ALL 3 of those games. People want to look at the Met game as if he was horrible, which he was, for ONE INNING. His first inning back, by the way. Clearly he was having trouble controlling his emotions, and thus his pitches. Remove that one inning, and his numbers, against the QUALITY opponents, are 17.0 IP, 12 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 13 SO, 2 HR; an ERA of 3.18, and a WHIP of .882. Not too bad, against the quality opponents. I'll take that, from a guy who was in the minors a month ago. It isn't as if he is getting fat off of bad teams and bombing against the good ones. He is suffering for one bad inning, the first inning he was back. I love how people like to dehumanize the players for their own pessimistic needs. The guy is pitching well, period. Against everybody. Better against bad teams, of course, but well against everybody.

John621: the numbers you posted are not hall of fame worthy. He is a lead-off hitter. he needs an .300 AVE with an OBP of nearly .400. He is a good player, and maybe the best SS ever to play in this town, but HOF quality he isn't yet

JK, yes I did. Look at the numbers. Until this year, his lifetime (9years)BA .276; OBP .331; Slugging .440; SB per season 37...all as a leadoff hitter. Plus one gold glove; three all star games. He is clearly on his way, if (and I know it's a big if) he continues at this level. And, I understand that this year is clearly an off year. But my point really was, there is no reason at all for Phillie fans to be booing this guy, just because he called them out.

Karen...There's your Eaton mention. While I'm at it, you just know that the Phils are going to keep him around. He's still got 1 year left at $8.5 mil, the Phils won't eat the contract, and we'd be lucky to get an empty bat rack in exchange for him. All signs point to him showing up at spring training and further complicating our plans for next year's rotation.

Gotta say Zo, you are REALLY reaching comparing Myers performance to Sabathia. Great analysis Hairball and a tip of the hat to Truth for raising the point. And why is it that Hamels always conveniently has a turn that misses the Mets? God forbid we throw our supposed "ace" at our biggest rival for the division. Clueless, again.

If we manage to pick up a top pitcher during off season (a real ace or number 2) then we should trade Myers for either a set up man to replace Gordon or a bat.

TK2575
Regardless of Myers's performance, we were already looking at a crowded rotation for next season. Now, it really gets interesting. Assuming Hamels and Blanton are definitley in the rotation for next year, that leaves Myers, Moyer, Kendrick, Happ, and Carrasco to battle between three spots. Should be interesting how the front office figures that one out.

I don't think we should be looking at it as if we made a trade for Myers but rather what it would be like having Myers pitch like he was counted on to pitch AND having Sabathia. It's not a bonus having Myers pitch well...he was being counted on to pitch well. So it's not like "well, we didn't get Sabathis, but we got Myers."

Truth has a point but it could be argued better. Here are the numbers. Myers has pitched 6 games, 3 against teams with W-L % greater than 0.500 (Mets, Cards, Dodgers). In those 3 games, he's 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA. He's pitched 3 games against below 0.500 teams (2 vs WSH - worst team in the league, 1 vs PIT) and is 2-0 with a 0.04 ERA. It's also important to note that he only lasts an average of 6 innings vs. the better teams (as opposed to nearly 8 innings vs. the weaker teams). So comparing him to Sabathia is silly at this point since Sabathia has been dominant against all competition levels.

jeff: good point. part of what makes cc so great is that he has single-handedly won most of his starts. if yost had pulled him early, then maybe he has a couple fewer wins thanks to a shaky 'pen. thankfully, the phils have solid arms to back up their starters. also, the brewcrew doesnt seem too worried about running down sabathia since they have no shot at signing him this winter (i think i read that he threw 130 pitches the other day).
Posted 01:47 PM, 08/21/2008
RollinsWasRight
jeff: that is not to mention that Myers is going to be here next year, so we have to be concerned about pitching him until his arm falls off, unlike the way Ned Yost has handled CC, clearly not caring if he tears every muscle, tendon and ligament in his pitching arm, as long as Milwaukee makes the playoffs.

DYM, yes CC has pithced more innings, and he is obviously more valuable, but remember, Chollie seemingly had Myers on a tight leash for his starts. One he hit the pitch count, out he came. He probably could have gone 2-3 more innings if needed. Out Pen is so much better then the Brewers, we can afford to rest our starters in late innings

I don't think they get anybody. I think they try to get someone really good, and fail to do so, and try to sell us on Hamels, Myers, Moyer (on a one- or two-year deal; his contract is up after this season), Blanton and Kendrick. Either that, or they settle for someone like Jeremy Bonderman, and try to convince us that they can "fix" him and turn him back into the guy he was in 2006.

jeff: I would keep him as a starter at this point. After the pains they have gone through just to get him to learn HOW to be a starter, what is the point of giving up on it now? And (and I know I am crazy for even thinking this) I honestly believe they are going to go after a pitcher in the offseason. I think they will make a dog-and-pony-show effort for CC, before getting seriously outbid by the Yankees, and then I believe they will make a serious play for Ben Sheets, but ultimately lose out to a team willing to go more than 5 years, which is where I think they will draw the line with him.

Just for accuracy, Myers pitched a dymanite game against the playoff contending Cardinals, and pitched very well against the Dodgers, though he was let down by the bats, of course. Yes, he is getting fat against bad teams, but pitching well is pitching well regardless of the opposition, and I am glad to see he is going well. I was really glad to see that last night I didn't think he pitched well at all, mediocre at best, IMO, yet managed to shut out a bad lineup anyway. That is a very good sign. Right now, they need as many scoreless innings as possible out of the pitchers.

Truth, one pitcher does not, should not, beat another team. As far as your question goes, he got the win against the Cardinals which is a good team. Other than the bad performance with the Mets, he's pitched well when it was his turn. Unfortunately, he got the loss against the Dodgers because the Phillies bats have been asleep. In the stretch run of the season, ALL teams are teams of consequence so pitching well against the lowly Nationals is still an accomplishment. Shutting them down in the innings that he pitched against them is great.

Until Myers beats a major league team I'm not convinced he's really back. Hope it happens--we need Myers. I, too doubt the Phils will sign a good FA pitcher so we'll obviously need him next year as well.

jeff: Without overthinking it (which I hate to do!), I'd say if he stays on course and finishes the year strong, you keep him in the rotation. That gives you the foundation of a good starting group: Hamels, Myers, Blanton. I'd want to see them add a 2/3 and a 5, depending on the situation with Moyers and Kendrick.

Was at the park last night. Perfect night for a game, and the Phils didn't disappoint. Myers took the Kyle Kendrick "bend, don't break" appraoch. Every time he seemed to be getting in trouble, he either came up with a big K or DP. Nice defense as well, with the highlights being Burrell's throw to the plate early and Rollins to Utley for a bare-handed catch-and-throw to Howard to complete a clutch double-play. Final comment on the J-Roll issue: Last night I found that most of the fans cheered Jimmay and the team. But I also learned that boos by a few are louder than cheers by many. The idiots who enjoy booing were very vocal, and took every opportunity to do so. It was all I could do to not toss my beer at a couple guys near us. By the way, who left the game early? The boobirds did. Frontrunners...? More like bottom feeders.
