Jimmy Rollins benched by Charlie Manuel during game
Bob Brookover
This time, Jimmy Rollins was benched by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.
Manuel had a closed-door meeting with Rollins after the shortstop failed to run out a pop up in Miami earlier this month, but the manager opted not to bench his starting shortstop.
After Rollins hit a sixth-inning pop up in front of home plate Thursday afternoon against the New York Mets, he started to veer off toward the dugout halfway up the first-base line. The ball was dropped by Mets pitcher Jonathan Niese and only then did Rollins start running and he had to stop at first base.
The shortstop then stole second base, but immediately made another baserunning blunder. With pitcher Kyle Kendrick at third base and one out, the infield was in with the Mets trying to avoid going behind by two runs.
Kevin Frandsen hit a grounder to second baseman Daniel Murphy and Rollins broke toward third with Kendrick still standing on the bag. Rollins was eventually tagged out and got an earful from Manuel when he returned to the dugout.
When the Phillies went out for the top of the seventh inning, Michael Martinez moved from right field to shortstop and Laynce Nix took Rollins' spot in the batting order.
More after the game.
It is time Charlie went. Not because he is a bad manager, but because the players no longer respect him. He ma go somewhere else and do well, but it is obvious his time in Philly is over. Since the AAA season ends in a few days, Ruben Amaro JR. should give great consideration to letting Manuel go and hiring Ryne Sandberg for the rest of this season and all of next. He's earned ashot after managing successfully in the minors for 6 years; 3 of those in AAA. The 30+ games remaining this season would give Sandberg a feel for the club and a chance to think about coaches for next year. The entire coaching staff should be replaced; bench coach, hitting coach and pitching coach. A wait and see on the 1st and 3rd base coaches. Sorry, Charlie, only the best manager stays in Philly. Ryno Rooter
Jimmie thinks that he's doing a great job at leadoff hitter. He should look in the stat's & see how bad he's doing. Get rid of him before he kills the team more. RonGon
Will the Phillies trade Jimmy Rollins only because he didn't run out a lousy ground ball? sonnybuoy01
Sad to watch the guys from the 2008 team turn into the players they are now; Charlie's right, money changes people. From now on, let's call him: "The artist formerly known as Jimmy Rollins" drbob1
What too so long? He should have been benched in May Ssteve115
Oh, please. The Phillies are a bunch of losers. Rollins just happens to be the only member of the team who hss figured it out. fredfromjersey- What part of North Jersey?
escapedcamden4monterey
So.....it keeps happening despite talks from the manager, benchings and fan outrage.....At what point does Ruben do something about it? wo_fat
A lot of players out of frustration cut it down when they pop up, but that does not make it right. Rollins brought on this situation himself and Manuel let it go on. Rollins defense still makes him a valuable player but no way a HOF. Its a slap in the face to his teamates, fans and even to himself. Rollins is not an elite player but still has value and hope all can get past this. This has no bearing on the situation he should stop the slacking. Don w
Jimmy Pop's act is getting old! HOF....what a joke. Gus L.
From the stands, I saw Niese hesitating, felt he might drop it, so looked at J stroll and started screaming at him. When I saw Charlie changing his lineup after the inning and Kendrick on the mound I knew Jimmy was being removed and cheered Charlie. Now I hope to follow up my respect for CHarlie's decision if Jstroll sits for a few games. onetitle
His focus is being the champion of the Ugandan little league team. He gave up on this season months ago. blaqjaq
Thank you, Charlie!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Philly Shadow
DM SAW YOU ON LIVE YOUR NUTS!!!! DAM JR GETS 10 MIL $ A YEAR AND THEY PLAY I SAID PLAY BASEBALL ==NOT WORK BASEBALL! FOR THAT REASON ALONE HE SHOULD SIT FOR A WEEK!!!! or give the Phil's back half because that's what he is giving in hustle--SORRY DM ENDS GUY--your delusional and must be a prissy guy--or born with a silver spoon---JR OWES US ALL OUT HUSTLE - for 10 mil$$$ -it's not a 365 day a year job--HE IS PLAYING A GAME--and he should respect it---
I THINK YOU SHOULD BE REPACKAGED FOR BEING A SUIT and a JR APOLOGIST!
carmen2
A bad example for those Ugandan kids. Cazptain Philadelphia- someone needs to punch him in the mouth Sam Crow
i believe its time for jimmy ,ryan, mayberry, kendrick, brown, and lee all to be traded !!! then we can watch chase, doc, frandsen, galvis take us to another championship !!! we can bring back werth, victorino, pence to fill out the roster and please the guys in the booth, they will not have much to say since criticism is there best asset but i will be able to watch a game with bits of silence the way richie and harry allowed the game to be more pastoral !!! typpy1
The man has no pride. I used to really enjoy watching JR play, but lately he only seems to "show up" 20% of the time. If the game's getting old for him, maybe it's time to retire and hang it up. HOF...I don't think so...he would be an embarrassment to all those who played the game hard consistently day in and day out. dogman5
Amaro was the dope that re-signed Poppins.
Manuel is the dope that kisses his *ss and bats him leadoff.
And the Phils wonder why they have fallen so far and so fast.
Manuel and Amaro need to be lined up against the wall and... advantasux
The Met play by play guys commented on J Strolls lack of hustle. Its not just us. youwish
Funny thing is that this happens every year. JRoll has a few lazy incidents. CM doesn't bench him right away but "talks" to him and proclaims "things are good." Jimmy fails to run out another pop up and then Charlie benches him. And Charlie wonders why the players don't seem to have any fire. Worse part is any young player or fringe player sees this and thinks it is the way things are done. A fresh voice is needed in the clubhouse. Move Charlie upstairs and bring up Ryno. PhillyinBmore- This would not be a story if the guy catches the ball. I agree that Jimmy is not Charlie Hustle but I don't think this incident was all that egregious. I don't think anyone in the league runs out pop ups the same way they do ground balls. Charlie had to pull him based on the last incident which was truly egregious. DEC
how funny that this happened the day after the Inquirer and several astute posters on this board began to again mention Hall of Fame and Poppins in the same breath. Earlier today, on the story about Chase moving to 3rd and the posts that followed, I questioned if moving The Stroller to 3rd didn't make a lot more sense to accommodate Galvis, which was the point of the story and Chase's supposed move.
What followed was a series of posts decrying my lack of faith in The Stroller and pointing out to me that we're looking at a guy ticketed for the HOF.
I've been laughing ever since. Thankfully, I was in Sec. 117 Row 27 today behind the Phils' dugout and had a perfect view of the proceedings that are the point of this story. Since it was Poppins' 3rd popup of the day (the first one fell behind the first baseman for a double), I didn't even bother to watch the pop-up itself, I just watched The Stroller veer off for the dugout right in front of me and was giving him an earful for the ages. then, the pop-up was dropped and he veered back to first. The crowd cheered the turn of events, of course, but that changed nothing.
Seeing that Bumbles the Dope pulled him before the next half inning was nice but it wasn't embarrassing enough to him. He should have been pulled as soon as he reached first base.
Anyway, can we get back to that HOF discussion? Really looking forward to discussing it with some of you.

Wow I missed the game but I'll be watching the replay later. AvoidSundanceVacations
Shame the teammates don't have the stones to jack up their "leadoff hitter". Alpheratz
BTW--it's beginning to look as if Michael Martinez in a better choice than JR. At the least he seems to be trying! BEMiller
This is one of those way past due things.
Jimmy Rollins was once an MVP, and actually did deserve it. He really was the one who made the Phillies go.
He's no longer and MVP, and not even close. He's one who's making the team GO DOWN!
The guy just doesn't seem to get it anymore, and I hate to say that it seems as if the time has come to waive him to give him his outright release!
GOOD GRIEF--such a long way down! BEMiller
SSDD. Nice contract. Relocator
Rollins has meant a lot to this team over the years and it is puzzling to see him playing like this. I suspect he is not happy with his results at the plate and it is starting to demoralize him. What he has to remember as a major leaguer is that there are a lot of player from the farm there now and more to come after the weekend, some if not all who look to him as the poster guy for hustle. It is indeed sad to see a once great player mailing it in. drbob456- Maybe he sees how Utley screwed the team this year by showing up lame right before the season. Chase gets to sit 1/4 of the yr. & still gets his $.
For all of Chase's hustle he still screwed the team this yr. wampum#60 - You sir, are an idiot. He waited until he was able to play the game the way he wants play it.There is no player IN BASEBALL who plays harder than Utley. Name me a player in Philly HISTORY who has played as hard. Only one I can think of. Clarke
drenner - I have no problem with the way Chase plays, my problem is how he never told the phils about his knee's till spring time. That was bush in my opinion. He had a off season to correct the problem. Either he can still play a full season or he should ask for trade to AL.
wampum#60 - Dawkins played as hard

That loser has been empowered over the years by Manuel and RAJ. Then RAJ signs him in the off season knowing what he is going to get. This is not all on loser JRoll. Manuel and RAJ take some of the blame here. scootch
Bad knees and all, I have never seen Chase Utley jog to first base. Ever. PhightinPhil
Players that don't hustle on every play should be benched. They make too much $$$$$$ not to. They should all take their example from Chase Utley. Even with the bad knees he hustles every play. fanup
Time to move him along. Only hustles when he want to, thinks he is a lead off hitter and pouts if he isn't, has plate discipline when he feels like it. Time to go. Thanks for everything. tony bell
As has been pointed out, Jimmy is a 10/5 guy, so effectively he has a no trade clause. With his age and attitude, the Phils would have o eat most of the money and get nothing in return, and that's only if Jim-Me approves the trade.
Face it...thanks to clueless Rube, we're stuck with Jim-Me for the duration. The only other real option is an outright release, but the Phils would still have to pay him, so that's unlikely, unless that would free up money against the luxury tax cap. Only in Philly...
What Charlie should have done was let him go out to short at the start of the 7th inning and then pull him. This way, the fans could have given him an earful as he walked across the diamond. He got off easy by being able to stay in the dugout. UDTate
What did the club expect when they gave this lazy A_ _ guaranteed money. It drives me nuts when I hear on the radio "Jimmy is really into the game tonight". Are you kidding me. A leader, I think not. Trade him if you can. Charlie said it best a month ago, money changes people. HC3
utley and rollins are different type of players utley love to play rollins plays because he gets paid for it stayoutofphilly
It's sad. One day you have Jimmy doing good things for the Uganda kids and the next day he's lollygagging it to first base... again.
dasher
Doesn't Hamels have 14 wins? Sounds like Double digits to me. re6035
Its over. Pop-N-Trot can start packing his bags. He's traded in the offseason. Bruno Sammartino
The problem with waivers is who is going to take him now even if Ruben eats his ridiculous contract?
In fact, don't think that other managers and general managers have noticed the attitude just like Philly fans did, which explains the lack of interest n free agency. wo_fat
Time for Jim Me Pop Up to go. He's not a team player and only cares about himself. There is no room for a clown like that on a Phillies team that wants to win next year. Short Circuit 3
Trade Rollins......he is lazy!!! Ask Charlie to up into the office as a senior adviser and bring in Ryan Sandburg. Every manager has a shelf life with his players.....CM's is over!!! PhillyTerm
Unfortunately, it's about 10 years too late for this to mean anything to Jimmy and it won't change any of his work habits. Sounds to me like somebody with some stones, like Utley, needs to ream him a new one in the clubhouse in front of the entire team. Even Kratz could get in his face reminding him how lucky he is to do this for a living. What an example from your star face of the team. You go Charles......sit him for awhile. Mark1npt
If Rollins should just retire. He clearly doesn't give two s...ts about this team. Apollo Creed
In other news, Kendrick has won 5 straight decisions. Goodness, he could possibly be the only other pitcher the Phils have that breaks into double figures. bobbyuk
Here is how the dugout conversation went. Charlie: you know Jimmy the are going to rip me in the papers tomorrow if I dont do anything so are you ok with taking a rest for the last few inning?. JIMMY: Thats fine coach I dont feel much like playing anymore today anyway. Charlie: thats a relief to me Jimmy because the last thing I want to do is offend you. JIMMY: no sweat coach mind if I go in the clubhouse for a cold one. CHARLIE: sure Jimmy go relax for the day. JIMMY: hey coach can I bat leadoff tomorrow? CHARLIE: sure Jimmy what ever you want. Glad we had this talk and noones feelings are hurt flyers1000
He should be benched for the next game as well. EaglesPhilliesIrish
As much as I'd to see Willie Mays Hayes/JStroll/Jim-Me or whatever your favorite nickname is GONE, I really don't want to see Michael Martinex playing SS the rest of the year, even though the games are meaningless. Maybe Cholly should just drop him to 8th in the lineup the rest of the year. Only in Philly...
The biggest problem is the horrible example JStroll sets for the younger guys on this team. I'll never understand his too cool attitude. kse
Time to send a message to EVERYONE. Kendrick, though, 4 straight very good games. Dubee/Cholly must have finally gotten to him. drhoffman
Trade the Rock & Roll Express (Rollins & Rosenberg) for the sons of Dickie Thon, Steve Jeltz, & Marvin Freeman with a grandson to be named later... Dobie Gillis
And I'm sure no teammates called him on it either... this team has zero backbone. echosmyron
Although some may think Chawlie has finally grown a set, the fact of the matter is the Stroller should have been pulled WHENEVER he didn't/doesn't hustle, not only when an error makes it impossible to ignore. And why was he allowed to remain in the game?
Anyone want to bet the Stroller is back leading off tommorrow night? And to think the Ruben couldn't see this coming before resigning him when most fans saw this coming a mile away........ wo_fat- I agree. If Charlie has rules he should enforce them all the time. Jimmy should have been benched the last time he did this. Not doing that contributed to it happening again in my opinion. s
If Charlie sat Rollins every time he didn't run a ball out, he'd never make it through a game.
Wonder why Utley can bust everything out of the box and Rollins refuses to? Colonel Angus- Because Ultey has heart
coloradoeagle
Several years too late. Sidewinder7
I'd drive him to airport-do not forget he is a 10 and 5 guy. MaxDom
he is slowly making his way to team cancer status. the franchise overpays him to come back after there was no market for him in free agency and this how he pays Philadelphia back. what an example he's setting for the young guys and September call-ups are this weekend. Glad Charlie aired him out but too little too late. yes put him on waivers and see what happens. we already have a major league ready shortstop for next year. Snake Pliskin
According to the Inquirer Little Mr. Pop-Up is going to the HOF! How can this be????? Wilhelm Von Humboldt- Mike Vick will make he Humane Society HOF before jimmy ever makes it to Cooperstown.
coloradoeagle - Jimmy, your behavior is absolutely disgusting and a major disservice to all the hard-working fans who pay top dollar to see you. You should be ashamed of yourself. Any of us would be fired if we conducted our business the way you do. jpgulli
Chawlie wouldn't have benched him except that the ball was dropped. The loser never hustles. He needs to go in a big way. wo_fat
Enough of this Jimmy Poppins nonsense. I hope and pray that he was put on waiver wires as it stands on August 30th and is dealt to a team that needs a SS. For the apologists out there that still think this guy is a gamer, you are clueless. For the love of god and the good of this team, get him out of here. I don't care how good he is defensively. It's not worth the BS anymore. Roy_Halladay- You're not going to move him with an adversarial approach. He has full no-trade control by being a 10-and-5 player. The only way they move Rollins is if he feels like he has a hand in the decision. Realistically, he's not going anywhere. Maybe if a team in the Bay area wants him. That's a pretty limited trade audience. s
- I think Rollins would accept a trade almost any place at this point. He knows this city has worn thin on his laziness. They have 3 teams in the bay area that are contending that I know of that he would accept a trade to.
Roy_Halladay - Which 3 teams would that be??
commenter1111
About effin time!! He should have pulled him immediately for not running out the popup. Only in Philly...
Seriously, how hard is it to run to first base on a pop-up? Not like he hasn't had the practice. Dang. Brainiac
C'mon Jimmy! The season's over, but start earning that $5.5!! Leo Getz- I had to pay $25 to park my car for a Phillies game thats usually $10-15 because the Eagles are playing tonight a meaningless preseason game! Best part is that I showed up in the 7th innig so my kids could go run the bases after the game. What does one playing a game have to do with the other??? Then I get to see Jimmy pull that nonsense. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
