Jimmy Rollins benched by Charlie Manuel during game

POSTED: Thursday, August 30, 2012, 3:02 PM

Did Charlie Manuel make the right move in benching Jimmy Rollins after his baserunning misadventures?
Yes.
No.

This time, Jimmy Rollins was benched by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.

Manuel had a closed-door meeting with Rollins after the shortstop failed to run out a pop up in Miami earlier this month, but the manager opted not to bench his starting shortstop.

After Rollins hit a sixth-inning pop up in front of home plate Thursday afternoon against the New York Mets, he started to veer off toward the dugout halfway up the first-base line. The ball was dropped by Mets pitcher Jonathan Niese and only then did Rollins start running and he had to stop at first base.

The shortstop then stole second base, but immediately made another baserunning blunder. With pitcher Kyle Kendrick at third base and one out, the infield was in with the Mets trying to avoid going behind by two runs.

Kevin Frandsen hit a grounder to second baseman Daniel Murphy and Rollins broke toward third with Kendrick still standing on the bag. Rollins was eventually tagged out and got an earful from Manuel when he returned to the dugout.

When the Phillies went out for the top of the seventh inning, Michael Martinez moved from right field to shortstop and Laynce Nix took Rollins' spot in the batting order.

More after the game.

I had to pay $25 to park my car for a Phillies game thats usually $10-15 because the Eagles are playing tonight a meaningless preseason game! Best part is that I showed up in the 7th innig so my kids could go run the bases after the game. What does one playing a game have to do with the other??? Then I get to see Jimmy pull that nonsense. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Seriously, how hard is it to run to first base on a pop-up? Not like he hasn't had the practice. Dang.

Enough of this Jimmy Poppins nonsense. I hope and pray that he was put on waiver wires as it stands on August 30th and is dealt to a team that needs a SS. For the apologists out there that still think this guy is a gamer, you are clueless. For the love of god and the good of this team, get him out of here. I don't care how good he is defensively. It's not worth the BS anymore.

You're not going to move him with an adversarial approach. He has full no-trade control by being a 10-and-5 player. The only way they move Rollins is if he feels like he has a hand in the decision. Realistically, he's not going anywhere. Maybe if a team in the Bay area wants him. That's a pretty limited trade audience.

I think Rollins would accept a trade almost any place at this point. He knows this city has worn thin on his laziness. They have 3 teams in the bay area that are contending that I know of that he would accept a trade to.

Chawlie wouldn't have benched him except that the ball was dropped. The loser never hustles. He needs to go in a big way.

Jimmy, your behavior is absolutely disgusting and a major disservice to all the hard-working fans who pay top dollar to see you. You should be ashamed of yourself. Any of us would be fired if we conducted our business the way you do.

he is slowly making his way to team cancer status. the franchise overpays him to come back after there was no market for him in free agency and this how he pays Philadelphia back. what an example he's setting for the young guys and September call-ups are this weekend. Glad Charlie aired him out but too little too late. yes put him on waivers and see what happens. we already have a major league ready shortstop for next year.
