Rollins Rolling Another 20

POSTED: Friday, September 14, 2012, 8:40 PM

It didn't take long for Jimmy Rollins to get to 20 home runs Friday night. And it didn't take long for @mitchgolich to point out he is the 12th SS to reach 20 HRs in four separate seasons.

Also, only 10 players in Phillies history have more 20-homer seasons than Jimmy Rollins. That list is below:

i'd rather see him get a respectable OBP than 20 HR.

He's a very good player. Consummate leadoff hitter these days? No. But he'll be on the Phillie Hall of Fame and he has a shot at the real one. Write it down. Best SS in Phillies' history -- easily. If you think his careeer numbers are good now, wait until 2014.

at the end of his career, compare his numbers to Barry Larkin because that is who Rollins will be compared to when the voters start voting for the Rollins in the HoF. The Avg, OBP, SLG wont be as high as Larkin, but he will have more HRs, SBs, chance for more hits. May not be a first or second balloter, but in a down year, he could get enough votes to get in.

Too many fans put him down. He has been as consistent as anyone for the past 10+ years. Hardly anyone fields better and he has over 2000 hits, so he must be getting on base sometime. The guy has been one of the best in the ML. Is anyone else hitting over .300 every year?

Philly will miss him when he's gone, big time

Rollins has been consistent but not spectacular for much of his Phillies career. He hits first so he gets an extra at bat every game so he has more chances to get more hits, runs, etc. Plus he's stayed injury free for almost his whole career. Let's not get crazy. How many times has he had 200 hits in a season and how many times has he hit over .300 in a season. He's benefitted from hitting leadoff and avoiding injury.

Rollins has been a spectacular player relative to his position. How many shortstops, with his fielding ability mind you, has put up the sort of offensive numbers he has. He will most likely finish with 2500 hits, close to 300 home runs, over a thousand RBIs, and 500 stolen bases. If he was a mediocre fielder his whole career, that would make him a decent player. But he hasn't been a mediocre fielder. He's the best fielding shortstop of his generation. In fact, if the Phillies weren't so bad early on in his career, he'd have a couple more gold gloves, and he will most likely win the GG this year. If he hadn't been injured, he would have won it last year. And the fact that he was the unquestioned leader of the most successful era in Phillies baseball makes him a great player. He will be considered for the hall of fame, and he very well should be. This guy gets such little credit in this town and all he's done is be one of the best players this franchise has ever had, and he also led the only team to win a title in this town in thirty years. Can't we for once recognize and celebrate a player while they're still playing, instead of waiting until they're retired.

He has a shot at the HOF. 2000 hits; 400 SB; 200 HR; 100+ TR; 400+ DO and approaching 1000 RBIs. Three time all-star, 3 Gold Gloves; 1 Silver Slugger and 1 MVP ..... and he still has 3-5 years to play and add to those already impressive numbers.

Philly fans didn't appreciate Mike Schmidt or Curt Schilling either --- we need to realize what we have in J-Roll; Utley and Howard. They are all putting up gaudy career statistics and they brought a championship to Philly (to go along with 8 consecutive winning seasons; 5 consecutive division titles and 2 trips to the WS). I'm so happy to have these guys to root for.

To the list of active players who were least appreciated by Phillies "fans" during the active years of their careers, let's not forget Lefty, our dominating HOFer ... aka Steve Carlton, for those who may have already forgotten :(

Calm down folks. I'm not a stat geek but for some perspective I looked at Rollins' WAR which is a pretty widely used stat. For his career he's somewhere between Julio Franco and Tony Fernandez. He's ahead of a few HOFers like the guys before the steroid era and he's behind a lot of players who aren't in the HOF like Jim Fregosi. He's a lifetime .270 hitter with 200 HRs in 13 years so he's not a great hitter and not a great power hitter. Let's face it, the stats show with over 700 plate appearances every year, he's been able to compile some nice stats while shortstops in the past would bat 7th or 8th in their lineups.

The main problem with Rollins is he's not a lead off hitter so his shortcomings are exposed every night. Where does a 250 hitter, with a bad OBP, with a little power and a lot of speed hit in a lineup? Obviously not 2-3-4-5. Espinosa of the Nats is a similar hitter and he bats 6th or 7th most night which is where Rollins probably should have hit most of his career once the average dropped a few years back.

Don't forget, Jimmy has already over 1100 runs scored. Not too many SS's have much more than that.

Boop – who goes by Bob Vetrone Jr. when he is undercover or paying bills – has been at the Daily News since 1982, after working for five years at the Philadelphia Bulletin up to its closing. Along with helping to build the sports scoreboards most nights, he has had great input into the papers’ special sports pullouts – March Madness, Broad Street Run, Record Breakers, Greatest Moments – as well as its day-to-day, award-winning event coverage.

A 1980 graduate of North Catholic, he took some evening college courses. Those lasted right up until the first conflict with a Big 5 doubleheader.

His favorite books growing up were the NBA Guide and the Baseball Encyclopedia, which was, for all intents and purposes, the Internet before there was an Internet.

He has been immersed in sports statistics since the early 70s, when his father (long-time sports writer, broadcaster and the Daily News’ Buck The Bartender), would take him into the Bulletin newsroom overnight in the summer and let him update the Phillies statistics in a little, black spiral notebook. But things have changed tremendously in the decades since … He now uses a big, black spiral notebook. Email him at boopstats@phillynews.com.
