Report: Vizquel no longer an option for Phillies

Free agency started this morning and, as of yet, nary a splash has been reported. But the wheels are turning behind the scenes, and the hints of impending player movement are starting to surface.

Multiple news outlets are reporting that shortstop Omar Vizquel is close to a agreement with the Chicago White Sox.

David Murphy of the Daily News mentioned Vizquel, a veteran of 21 Major League seasons, as a possible fit for one of the Phillies' bench openings in his free agent preview earlier this week.

Murphy noted that Vizquel's desire to play for a winner and his relationship with Phillies manager Charlie Manuel (the two were together with the Cleveland Indians) could lead to the Texas Rangers free agent coming to Philadelphia.

But Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com reported today that Vizquel will instead team with White Sox manager and fellow Venezuelan great Ozzie Guillen in Chicago.

Vizquel's experience and versatility made him an attractive option for teams, like the Phillies, looking to add a reliable infielder to the bench this offseason. Vizquel is an 11-time Gold Glove winner. He hit .266 with 14 RBI playing in a reserve role for Texas in 2009.

    Sorry to see Vizquel won't be bringing his 14 rbi and Medicare-ready body to the Bank. I can't believe this guy was ever a realistic option. Thank you White Sox for taking this DL-ready senior off of our hands.
