Report: Phillies sign Luis Encarnacion, top Dominican third base prospect

The Phillies have signed Luis Encarnacion, a top third base prospect from the Dominican Republic, according to Baseball America.

The Phillies have signed Luis Encarnacion, a top third base prospect from the Dominican Republic, according to Baseball America.

Enarnacion stands 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, and was rated as Baseball America's No. 4 international prospect in their rankings last month. He was not eligible to sign a professional contract until turning 16, which happened at 12:01 a.m. Friday morning. The deal was done right then.

The Inquirer's Matt Gelb reported Thursday that the Phillies were the favorites to land Encarnacion.

According to Baseball America, Encarnacion has "plus raw power from the right side." Though he plays third base now, the publication projects that he will move to left field or first base.
