Reading outfielder Tyson Gillies suspended

The hits keep on coming for Tyson Gillies, the centerfield prospect acquired as part of the ill-fated Cliff Lee trade of December, 2009.

Gillies has been suspended from Double-A Reading for what the club says is a violation of team rules. No further information is available at this point in time.

Gillies has struggled to stay on the field since the Phillies acquired him from the Mariners along with righthanders Phillippe Aumont and J.C. Ramirez in exchange for Lee.

He appeared in just 28 games in his first season in the organization, which was marked by hamstring injuries and an arrest for cocaine possession (the charges were later dropped). The hamstring troubles carried over into 2011, when he appeared in just three games. This year, Gillies is hitting .294/.382/.433 in 46 games at Reading, but he missed close to two months with a concussion, only recently returning to the field.

A little misguided here. One one hand you say it was a terrific deal, on the other you say Rube mislead fans. The reality is, Rube mislead everyone....including 31 other GMs...including the behemouth Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Angels, etc...

He essentially "parked" Lee in Seattle knowing he would have a better chance of re-signing him. Yes...we COULD have gotten more, but chances are we wouldn't have Cliff Lee NOW.

I'm not the biggest Rube fan, but we all need to look at the bigger picture.

I love comments like this, and responses patting your back like you were on the other line while Ruben was calling all the other GM's. Thank you so much for clearing this up, maybe Ruben will call you about the next trade and ask your advice, since you know so much.

And he didn't have a track record of issues before the Phillies acquired him? Someone didn't do their homework. Is that you again, Rube?

Anybody know what "violation of team rules" means? Or usually means? There have got to be 2 or 3 things that are the most common violations. It would be nice to know what they are.

And if they had Lee in 2010, with their other pitchers, in a year when they were one game from going to their Third World Series in a row, maybe we would have had a more favorable outcome. Instead, we got beat by the lousy stinkin' Giants, and our window of opportunity is now closed with a thunderous bang. That "ill-fated"

Not all the Lee BS again, he just about singlehandedly ruined the Phils in the playoffs against the Cards. He sucked something awful in them for Texas, too. He hasn't exactly set the world on fire this year either. Maybe by getting three guys, no matter how bad, the Phils did the fleecing.

Really?...Keep drinking that water out of the Rio Grande...That Cliff Lee trade, derived out of a snit RAJ had with Lee's agent, was done on the fly, and the trio of Gillies,Aumont, and Ramirez have all been less that promising....Contrast that with Travis D'arnaud,Anthony Gose,Michael Taylor,Jonathan Villar,Jonathan Singleton, and Domingo Santana (who as a 19 year old is TERRORIZING high A)....Fleecing?....And if Cliff Lee was so aweful in Texas (????), how did he have the Phillies,Yankees, and Rangers banging down the doors for him?

Dude - Phillies made tremendous acquisitions to get Halladay and Lee and Oswalt for that matter. At best, 2-3 of those guys have any decent amount of time in big leagues and maybe one has good career. Give it a rest with the whining will ya. Michael Taylor - wtf. Ill-fated is not trying to wn a world series and I give Amaro this - he tries to get it done.

Oswalt? 36 starts, and deemed not worth retaining is a great acquisition?..For Gose? For Villar?...So the Phillies did not have a good shot in 2010 WITHOUT Oswalt?.Sure they did...Power hitting shortstops who steal 50 bases in a season are rare..And while other CFs in the system, J James,K Hudson,Z Collier (starting to get it going),A Altherr are lagging WAY behind, Anthony Gose would've been the ideal replacement for Shane Victorino...It's not whining Jack...It's a fact...RAJ got silly...And as good a player as Hunter Pence is, that deal will stick out the worst in the end....BTW-Michael Taylor would be a 4rth outfielder now for the Phillies, in no way worthy of a wtf.

@Bears Friend...I encourage you to re-evaluate your Michael Taylor comment. Have you checked his career numbers? 46 AB/1 HR/ .196 BA and he is now 26. For all Conlin's reviews on being "toolsy" he has not proven he can be the 4th Outfielder on a CYO team...and that is fact, friend.

Doesn't seem to have the heart to play in the bigs.

Trade him for the rights to Phyllis Diller. An upgrade for sure.

aintnorep, the trade kept them from having both halladay and lee together for the 2010 season and playoffs...it also necessitated trading good prospects (unlike what we got in return for lee) for oswalt to take lee's spot in the rotation. are you so obtuse and myopic that you don't see that?
