Polanco appears ready to return

POSTED: Friday, July 16, 2010, 3:14 PM

All signs point to third baseman Placido Polanco coming off the disabled list and rejoining the Phillies in time for Saturday afternoon's game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Polanco carried out his plan of playing for single-A Clearwater Thursday and the Phillies' rookie Gulf Coast League team Friday. He played five innings and went 1-for-4 with a run scored against Bradenton Thursday night, then went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored Friday morning for the GCL Phils.

GM Ruben Amaro would only say "maybe" when asked if Polanco would come off the disabled list in time for Saturday's game, but don't be surprised if that move is definite by the end of the day.

Since Polanco (strained left elbow) and second baseman Chase Utley (torn ligaments in his right thumb) simultaneously went on the disabled list, the Phillies are 7-7 and have scored three runs or fewer in six of their 14 games.

lots of frontrunners on here with not much of an understanding of the frustrating ebbs/joyous flows of a baseball season. This isn't football, folks. It ain't over till it's over! And until then ROOT, ROOT, ROOT FOR THE HOMETEAM! If they don't win, it's a "shame," not the end of the world. Lighten up. Lots of baseball left to play. the dog days, the stretch run . . . There ya go, crack a brew, grab some peanuts, popcorn, and Cracker Jacks, and settle in -- that's the spirit!

Polanco better get a lot of hits and RBIs the rest of the season, otherwise Amaro's decision to let Feliz go will turn out to be another mistake, like letting Lee and Park go. Seems like every time the Phils play anothe rteam, that team has a former Phil who is either an All-Star or is carrying that team. (I thought the hullabaloo about sign stealing was nonsense at the time, but I have to admit I'm beginning to believe the allegations given the way the Phils have been relatively impotent since getting caught.) There is absolutely no reason to keep using and paying Madson. Bring back Nelson Fig.

Dear Quitters, Please feel free to abandon this team. Just don't come back when you realize that quitting on a team after a half season is stupid, and the Phils work their way back into the playoffs. Frontrunners aren't welcome. Idiots.

the whining fans here are like wolves baying at the ascending moon, hungry, frustrated. Here's some therapy. Get a coin. Flip it endlessly, cheering wildly on heads, booing, or baying if you wish, at tails. Keep it up till you fall asleep. This is a great exercise to understand the serendipitous fortunes of sports, and to let your emotions out on something just as inconsequential to your life as sports. Pure entertainment.
