Phils offer arbitration to Ibanez, Madson and Rollins
Bob Brookover
The Phillies offered salary arbitration to three of their five free agents Wednesday with the biggest surprise being left fielder Raul Ibanez.
As expected, the team offered arbitration to pitcher Ryan Madson and shortstop Jimmy Rollins and declined arbitration offers to reliever Brad Lidge and starter Roy Oswalt.
Should Rollins sign with another team, the Phillies would be compensated with a first-round pick that would be forfeited by the signing team provided that team finished among the top 15 in baseball last season. The Phillies would also receive a compensatory pick between the first and second rounds of the draft for Rollins.
If Madson signs elsewhere, the Phillies would get a first-round pick just in front of the team that signs him provided that team finished in the top 15. That team would retain its first-round pick and select immediately after the Phillies.
Should Rollins or Madson sign with teams that finished among the bottom 15 in baseball, the Phillies would receive that team's second-round pick.
The Phillies would also receive a compensatory pick between the first and second round if Ibanez signs elsewhere. It's possible the Phillies have already ascertained that Ibanez will not accept salary arbitration. Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said last week that the team is still considering re-signing Ibanez and using him in a reduced role with John Mayberry Jr. getting an opportunity to be the starting left fielder.
Ibanez made $12 million in the final year of his contract last season and it is unlikely the Phillies would risk going through the arbitration process with the 39-year-old outfielder.
The players have until Nov. 30 to accept or reject arbitration. If they accept, it is a binding contract and the Phillies would happily bring back Madson and Rollins on one-year deals.
The Phillies can still re-sign Lidge and Oswalt, but they will not receive any compensation if the two veteran pitchers sign elsewhere.

Are they nuts? Why would they offer arbitration to Ibanez? If he goes through arbitration they'll probably have to give him a raise! It makes no sense at all. SteveS11- According to Channel 6 Sports News, if he signs with another team, the Phillies get a draft pick - the same for Madson & Rollins.
sonnybuoy01 - Not the same, really. If Rollins or Madson sign elsewhere, the team gets two picks. If Raul signs elsewhere, the team gets one pick.

They're offering arbitration for compensation ....More or less Ibanez is doing the organization a "solid", because Raul is not going to get similar money from what the Phils have paid him, yet he's not going to agree to a big discount ( like for example, 2 million )...>Sort of like a gentleman's agreement...Wouldn't be surprised if Raul works for the organization down the line..Class act. bearsfriend
Maybe Raul could agree to be player/hitting coach sonnybuoy01- Did they outlaw breaking balls in the new CBA? Why haven't I heard about this?

Raul would be crazy not to accept. Amaro talked a lot of game about changing the philosophy but it looks like the same team will be on the field next year. KINGOFZED
Raul loves Philly. He knows the only way he gets signed somewhere is to accept a major salary cut from his last year. I think there is a very good chance the Phillies resign him for 1 year for 4-5 mill. Raul almost drove in 90 runs last year after a brutal start and he had lots of key hits.. I'd like to see him here again in a reduced role. bradco- Unless the rules changed with the new CBA(or I'm wrong), they would have to offer him at least 80% of his salary in arbitration. In any case, he loves Seattle more- as does Moyer. I've watched the broadcasts on MLB.TV where both those guys were schmoozing all over the commentators promising that the minute their careers are over they are permanent, Seattle residents.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Sonnybuoy01! A HITTING coach? Wouldnt someone have to teach him how to hit again first? Neebo- Uncle Cholly will!
sonnybuoy01 - I think there's more to this than meets the eye. First of all, the Phils are probably offering Rollins arbitration to see how serious his intentions are. If he refuses arbitration, he probably is adamant about a 5-year contract and more money, and he probably knows where he can get both. Rollins' refusal gives Amaro a clear signal that it's time to pursue Jose Reyes. In the case of Madson, the Phils probably think there's still a chance he would accept arbitration and a significant raise rather than continue searching for a bigger payday that might not materialize. Madson is a different kind of guy who has previously said he wanted to play his entire career in Philly. A new 3-year contract for more money to be a set-up man and occasional closer may be all the Madson really wants. As far as Ibanez is concerned, I agree that he and Amaro have probably already talked about his future and possibly even already worked out a gentleman's agreement. The Phils have been very good to Ibanez and he's smart enough to realize it. For the chance to continue playing at his age, Ibanez would probably be willing to take a significant cut in pay - probably even less than he would be guaranteed through arbitration. All in all, the Phils offering these 3 guys arbitration is very smart. Neither Lidge nor Oswalt would be worth what they might get through arbitration. The Phils will probably be content to remember Lidge as he was in 2008 and try to resign Oswalt to a more reasonable contract.
- Rollins has no reason in the world to accept arbitration. None. Refusing it will not mean that he is "adamant about a 5-year contract." It will mean that he is adamant about getting more than a one-year contract.
phillyl0 - Um, no. Rollins and Madson were offered arbitration only so the Phillies get draft picks if (when in Madson's case) they sign elsewhere. s
Raul would be a good 4/5 outfielder and is a solid leader on a team that is lacking in that area aside from Doc. Northcountry
The team must want him to play left field. No other team will touch him with that arbitration tag on him. Seal Rock- The arbitration tag won't have any impact on his appeal to other teams. Any other team can sign him without giving up a draft pick.

Jeez, onthebucks, learn how to be succinct. Your post is longer than the article to which you are responding. lol phillyinsd
Gotta trust what RAJ is up to. Madsen will get a 3-4 year deal to close elsewhere. Thats a given folks. He is NOT coming back to set up Papplebon. Boris will not allow one of his clients to take less, especially since the bar was set at 4 years/$44 million. Rollins tag makes perfect senese. If JRoll gets that 5 year deal (and yeah, pigs do fly), the Phils get an important draft pick. My guess is that JRoll tries to get a deal that fits him, or gambles with a one year arbitration deal (boy, wouldn't RAJ love that to give Galvis one more year of seasoning). Ibanez give the Phillies protection until Howard is back at full strength. Mayberry Jr. goes to 1st and Raul roams left field until the big piece comes back. Lidge may in fact resign for an incentive based deal, and Oswalt will NOT be in Philly pinstripes. He wants a 2-3 year deal and due to his back/attitude, he ain't gettin what he wants, definitely not $16 million. drhoffman- ??? Rollins can't do both. If he accepts arbitration, he has to play with the Phillies in 2012 and if you think he was strolling around this year, imagine what he would be doing on a 1-year deal when he is a year older.
jtj06
well done Seal Rock
Ofering Arbitration does not mean that the team has to offer an increase to prior year's salary ! I agree with others that RAJ and Raul have discussed next year and beyond and have a outline of what the deal would look like. As a 4/5 outfielder, when healthy he is still a very productive hitter - glove ??? proceed with caution ! mrdip- They have to offer him 80%, then he asks for more and the panel picks one, if they can't agree ahead of time. He WAS the third most productive outmaker at the plate in the NL last year, but who needs that kind of production?
jtj06
If Amaro has worked something out with Ibanez, he'd better hope that Ibanez is good for his word. Because if Ibanez goes through arbitration, he'll no doubt get a raise and the Phillies will be stuck with him for another year for even more money than they paid him last year. I wouldn't mind having him back as a backup left fielder and pinch hitter, but not at the kind of money that he's been paid the last few years. Not even close to that amount. SteveS11
I think it's smart that the Phils offer Madson and Rollins arbitration, but to do so with Ibanez makes no sense at all. Regardless of whether there is an agreement of some type, what is the purpose of bringing him back? He seems like a class act, but this team really needs to get YOUNGER, with more speed. They need a leadoff hitter, and Amaro doesn't seem to want to mess with "his guys". Ibanez is becoming his version of Bobby Abreu, whom Wade would NEVER have traded if he had stayed GM. Regardless of what Gillick might say about the matter, this is NOT a Gillick move. 76erfn
As earlier writer pointed out and just about everyone forgets: Raul had NINETY RBIs last year. I, too, would really like to see him back as fourth outfielder/pinch hitter. VicM- You must be pining for the days of Rico Brogna because 90 ribbies was an off year for him with the Phillies. Any chump who bats 3-6 and stays healthy is going to get 90 RBI. Pedro Feliz got 82 out of the seven hole. You wouldn't win 60 games with Brogna, Feliz, and Ibanez as your power stalwarts even though they could get you almost 300 RBI if you had them batting 3-4-5 on any big league team. Get a clue.
jtj06
Half of you are idiots. They know Rollins and Madson will not accept arbitration and we knew weeks ago the Phils were doing this. The only surprise was Ibanez, who despite what you've read here actually had a decent year and is an upgrade over Francisco if they keep him in a backup role at a much reduced salary. smfree31

Raul might have driven in 90, but he looked helpless and slow most of the year, and his fielding leaves much to be desired. if he's on the team, can Charlie resist the urge to put him back in the lineup when Mayberry hits a dry spell? I doubt it. And slow is as slow swings. Eephus
Like it or not it will be very hard to replace Ibanez' 20hr/90rbi....Maybe he and Mayberry switch places, Mayberry gets 20/90 and Ibanez in part time duty gets 15/50? Then it's a wash over last year. We can only hope Raul doesn't go through another 38 ABs without a hit. More of Raul off the bench with Thome as our 2 LH pinchitters? Wiggy, BennyFresh and Valdez as our RH pinchitters and backups. I want to see a lot of Phillies platooned against tough righties and lefties and that includes Howie at 1st when he comes back. He should never face a LH pitcher again, I don't care how much he makes. Maybe he'll be embarrassed by sitting against lefties and take it upon himself more to improve. he can pay Moyer $5mil just to throw him slop from the left side for 1/2 season. maybe jamie can even tell him how to recognize it and hit it? Mark1npt- Small sample set but Raul has never been good off the bench. I like the guy but for a team with the offensive decline we've seen in 2010 and 2011 to field an older team in 2012 makes little sense. I'm waiting for the inevitable "if healthy" clause from RAJ when they sign him. s
- Funny that you use the word "replace" when the Wins Above Replacement stat had to be customized to Wins Below Replacement player as Ibanez accomplished the rare feat of being a regular player who was actually worse than a generic replacement at his position. If he doesn't retire maybe they can rename it Wins Above 40 Year Old Replacement and judge Raul against his age group like a fun-run or something.
jtj06
Wouldn't the Phils get to use the stats of the 2nd half of 2011 in the arbitration case vs. Raul? Did the Mayberry/Francisco combination have more starts than Raul? Either way, their case would be simple... he is only a platoon caliber player, 40 years old, terrible defensive range, below average arm and low on base %. He will not get much if he signs up for arbitration. Clt Philly Fan- Arbitration to Ibanez is a little mind boggling. If I understand correctly, if the Phils didn't offer him arbitration they would not be able to negotiate any new deal with after early December (not until May anyway). And if he's traded we get a pick. If he accepts it seems likely we overpay for him. But him accepting or us negotiating means they want him back? Look, I'm a huge Raul fan abd yes he's a class guy, but just how old should the 2012 team be? We're already added a 41 year old to the bench and and 34 year old utility guy. I think some people in the organization may still be drunk on the champagne of 2008. s
Comment removed.- Apparently the key to the new hitting approach is declining old guys with slower bats who have swung for the fences their entire careers. s
Look at the paranoia. Ibanez will NOT accept arbitration, will become a free agent, and the Phillies will get a draft pick if he signs elsewhere. It's a no-brainer move that was definitely worked out between RAJ and Raul before the decision was made. If there was ANY chance he'd accept arbitration, RAJ never would have done it. Stop hitting the panic button for no reason. vvvmetallicavvv- So...who is going to pay him $10 million or sign him to a multi-year deal? If the answer is nobody, then he accepts his minimum 0.80 x $12,166,666 offer or counters with something higher and goes to arbitration. Rube is probably looking to sign him to a multi-year deal because you can never have enough Zero-tool players with who make outs more than 70% of the time they bat.
jtj06
Wow that's dumb. I'm pretty sure- at least in the old CBA- the lowest you can offer a player in arbitration is 80% of what they had been previously getting. So Ibanez can accept and be guaranteed almost $10 million to work on his wins-below-replacement records. If Amaro is going to throw money around after players who should be retired, he better go out and get Fielder because money sure doesn't seem to be a valid excuse for having such a punchless line-up. jtj06
Check out Article VI, F. c. i on the old CBA (I haven't heard of a change). They can't offer him anything less than 80% of last year in arbitration. I guess they can negotiate something less, but that would be a multi-year deal unless Ibanez has Alzheimers. I can't watch him play. Amaro is sick. He's the same guy that made us suffer through a multi-year Jamie Moyer deal at age 46. His new nickname is: Ruben "Social Security" Amaro. jtj06
Hope Madsen stays, the hell with the other 4. Get rid of Andy Reid too while we're cleaning house..... TEDcGEGI
If Raul returns they will have three 40 year olds on the 25 man roster at the same time by June 2. Wonder if that is a MLB record. Dull
If his salary is reasonable and he's only used against righthanders it is a solid move. I just wonder if a salary awarded by an arbitrator would fit the description of "reasonable". riles1875

I figured they would offer arbitration for JRoll and Madson, but I did a double-take on Ibanez...the only way it makes sense is if Ibanez has already agreed to turn it down in a back-door deal. Maybe RAJ has worked out a 1-yr deal plus a handshake on Raul staying in the organization post-retirement..I guess we'll find out Polecat_39
Jtj06 is right. The Phillies can't offer less that 80%. This is absolutely insane. We are becoming older and slower by the minute. Raul will accept arbitration. Nobody is going to offer him more that what he's going to make if he goes to arbitration. He'll be lucky to get a $5 million one year deal. Even if they have a deal in place for less money, it's not a good move in my opinion. EL Zorro
Please, please, resign Jimmy Rollins, give him five years, give him ten years. He is the heart and soul of the team. PENNANT1950
Offering Ibanez arbitration is about the stupidest thing this team could have done. Nobody wants that clown for more then a couple of million per at most and he will easily get 8-10 mil in arbitration ecause even though his numbers sucked he had decent counting stats. Good job Rube! brannigan73
say what you want about Raul,...but one thing is for sure;..he applies himself and knows the game and he should be given the opportunity to return at decent money like say 6-8 in a reduced role rather than just let go SyddBarrett
