Phillies schedule private workout with Cuban prospect Yasmany Tomas

The Phillies, as they have been in the past, are on the long list of teams interested in acquiring slugging Cuban prospect Yasmany Tomas. Today, they will get to monitor the 23-year-old outfielder during a private workout in their Dominican facility.

According to Baseball America, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. will be there himself for the display.

Tomas is not technically a free agent; he has yet to be granted an unblocking license by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and has not procured documents that maintain he is a permanent resident of Haiti. These are reportedly on their way to complete, however, and the frenzy of MLB teams curious about his bat has already begun.

The Phillies are considered a longshot by some to land the young talent, as they are far from the only team to schedule a private workout.

Tomas started playing in top Cuban baseball at age 17. In 2011, through 69 games, he maintained a .301/.333/.580 slash line with 16 home runs for the Cuban national team. While playing in the World Baseball Classic this past year, in which Cuba was eliminated in the second round, he went 6-for-16 with two home runs.
