The Phillies have designated outfielder Delmon Young for assignment.

They made the move in order to make room for their newest signing, outfielder Casper Wells, on the 25-man roster.

Young recorded a .261 batting average in 291 plate appearances over 80 games this year. He had 71 hits, including 13 doubles and eight home runs, and was nine plate appearances away from receiving a $150,000 bonus.

The Phillies will pay Wells a sum less than what they would have paid Young. Wells will join the team tonight in Washington ahead of a 7:05 p.m. game against the Nationals.
