The Phillies' cuts continued this morning as several more players were optioned or reassigned to minor league camp:

  • LHP Jeremy Horst (4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 HR, 5 BB, 3 SO)
  • LHP Cesar Jimenez (6.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 HR, 3 BB, 3 SO)
  • RHP Ken Giles (4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO)
  • C Tommy Joseph (1-for-6, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 2 SO, 1 BB)
  • OF Tyson Gillies (1-for-9, 1 2B, 1 CS, 2 SO, 1 BB)
  • OF Zach Collier (1-for-10, 4 SO)
  • IF Andres Blanco (1-for-11, 2 SO)
None of the names on the list were surprising, and the most encouraging of those cut was 23-year-old prospect Ken Giles, who has gained attention since the Arizona Fall League, where his fastball was clocked at 97 mph, and has hit as high as 103.

Catcher Lou Marson was released as well, whose spring numbers (1-for-3, 1 2B, 1 R, 1 SO) were not enough to win him the backup catching job behind Carlos Ruiz. Returning to camp is catcher Sebastian Valle, who had been DFA'd and outrighted to the minors following the 2013 season. Valle hit .203/.245/.359 in 379 PA in Reading.

Prospect Maikel Franco remains in Clearwater.
