He needs to concentrate more on baseball and less on pies in the face during post game interviews; then perhaps he might get interviewed for making a meaningful contribution instead of being the team clown eyesell
He's not saying that we didnt stand behind them in the past. He's telling us to stand behind them now when they need us the most. Get behind them when they're losing. Nobody should bail on them now or give up on them because for the past 3 yrs the Phillies have shown the ability and heart to come back against improbably odds like in 2007 when they were down by 7 games in the middle of September and then in 2008 when they won the division on the last day of the season afte another amazing september and then all the incredible comebacks last year and in the playoffs. This team might look dead but everyone should know better than to count this group of guys out. You people are ready to jump down his throat and are just looking for a reason to hate someone. Look, the fans are frustrated and im sure Victorino is really frustrated too and im betting alot of his comment was just frustration. We have the right to go there and boo. We paid money and we can do that. The players arent stupid they realize that. But this team has given us some of the best years of baseball in some our lives. We owe it to them to stand behind them and at least wait till the last out of the season because until then its not over. Im sure alot of people think that we dont owe this multimillionaire players anything but if you people get on this blogs every day and read some of the comments that i read its clear there ARE alot of fairweather fans so boo if you want but dont give up on them. philliekev04
That is really a dumb position for Victorino to take. Just say the right things Shane when things aren't going well and the fans will continue to stand by you.By the way, Werth should call that kid and his father in from the other night and buy them dinner. The look on that kids face when Werth dropped the F-bomb just killed me...And while I'm on the topic of Werth, his mental approach to at-bats at times borders little league mentality. He swings at pitches in the dirt with a 2-0 count, and then gets called out looking with runners in scoring position...I can only think that although these players are blessed physically, there mental capacity to process the situations and recognize pitches is limited. philly444- Phront runners. road515
- The thing that everyone seems to forget is that Cliff Lee would not have made much of a difference. The problem is the overwhelming amount of injuries. This team should turn it around after the all-star break. Unlike every other team, we will have some damn good players who have not been worn out by the long season. Ryan Madson being back is a BIG plus, and Chase Utley will be much more effective late in the season after getting a lot of rest. I would like to see Polanco be a little tougher. Sometimes you just have to play injured. That said, i never thought he would be as good as he is at third base. While Chase is out, I would like to see Ransom play a little more at 2nd. Face it, Jamie Moyer has done much more than anyone expected, and Cliff Lee would have pitched well, and our bullpen would blow it, or we would not score any runs. We will need one starter in the rotation. And one arm in the bullpen would help too. I think as bad they played and still be hanging around is going to come back and haunt the Braves & Mets. They had a chance to bury the Phillies and they didn't and soon we will be back at full strength and well rested.
Victorino has no idea what it is like to pay all that money for a family group of seats on a scorching hot Saturday afternoon and then have to watch the Phils roll over and play dead to the Blue Jays, while the dozen or so toronto fans in the stands get to cheer and embarass the 'home town' fans. A game where the great Shane was a shameful in not being able to move a runner on base. atp2007
Trade him? TRADE HIM??? Snoddy, your the a....h....and YOU need to be traded. If you're a loser, STOP POSTING!!!!! Grazman- shane needs to shut up and start hitting the frickin' ball... tell him to look at his contract and then check his stats. i love shane, but his does STINK right now. ...and don't tell me about front-running...i've been a die-hard since '72. if i was a front-runner i'd be a yankee fan...
Vic is a genuinely good guy with the fans - I've often seen him sign stuff & speak to kids when other players have walked on by - but he has to learn that thin skin just bleeds here. 80 consecutive sell outs. Where else could he play where he has that support - nowhere in the NL East! Ed3
Victorino needs to realize that this IS NOT 2 years ago!!! It doesn't matter what you've done THEN...it's about what you've done NOW! mgm1974
I guess having at least 2 years of straight sellouts doesn't count as standing behind a team. Grow up Shane. Also nice job getting picked off first base yesterday after you almost got picked off the pitch before. unknownblogger
Victorino has to realize that just showing up for work doesn't count as doing a good job. joepir
I agree with you Achilies except for one thing: How many games in the last month has Ibanez gotten on base -- game after game -- and no one brought him in. He has been more consistant recently than most of the other high priced players. phillytransplant
"We've been fans like since forever...since 2007" Wow. A whole three years! Victorino is right. stop2think
I commented in yesteray's article too. These million dollar players gripe about fans voicing their displeasure as well as their support. First, see how fun it is to lplay in front of 2,000 fans at a Baltimore or Cleveland or Pittsburgh or Florida. Oh, by the way, you won't be playing for the same money either. I feel if you want us to have lower expectations/demands, don't accept the fat contracts. And by agreeing with Rollins "frontrunner" comment of seasons back, you showed how clueless you are too. Name one city who will support their fans without criticisim or if they are losers....no one. Who wants to pay all that money to see losing baseball? Just shows that baseball players live in a dream world and have NO touch with the fan base. I am opressed. Clem- Ohhhhh! I don't want to sound anti-Amaro... but between his moves and Manuel's lack of moves, no wonder the players are stumbling around in a fog. Amazing though, Howard has made some real progress as a player and they beat up on him. But I have serious problems with C. Manuel as Manager. This is a time/place for Bowa!!! baworks
- If he could play baseball with his mouth, he'd be the MVP this year.
Victorino and all pro athletes should realize that as fans we can't go on the field and play the game for our team when our teams are underachieving and one of the ways we show frustration is to boo, it happens in ALL CITIES. Play better and we won't boo problem solved. philsfan417
Comment removed.
Bill-I completely agree with your comments. I wouldn't trade him-but I'd have Manuel sit down with him and just talk it over with him. Sheesh-sometimes I wish as a fan I could just talk to these players and just tell them what we mean when we boo and yell and such. PAJames
Wow I'm really disappointed in Victorino-one of my favorite Phillies-but is he necessarily wrong? I myself am a huge Phillies fan and have been one since long before 2007. So I've seen my fair share of poor Phillies teams. So there's no way anybody can call us the you know what word. I think fans care so much and they want the Phillies and Victorino to play to their potential. We all know that this team is much better than their record indicates. Shane-we haven't forgotten what you've done in the past. We're just frustrated that the team isn't playing the way it should be. PAJames
Vic talks like he runs the bases .. I didn't even hear him yet but he stops and spins and stalls and gets thrown out at first trying to steal. I can't believe a Bill Hicks fan is on this site. sportsdead
Victorino is a spark plug, but his antics tend to push the limit sometimes. What was he doing with the bat at home plate following Schnieder's HR.....he looked like he was about to ram Brian in the cohjones. Very strange. dri_as_a_bone- Whether he is right or not, the fact is he should take a long hard look in the mirror before he whines about the criticism. Fact is he is playing lousy this year after getting a new contract from the Phillies, the team is also playing lousy, and he needs to first ask himself if any criticism of his performance is valid. If he is honest with himself he'll agree that it it is. Then he would simply say the fans are frustrated like the team is, I've got to play better and do my part to help get this team on track, then everyone will be happy. Instead he comes across as a pouty child who doesn't always get positive reinforcement for every action. If the Phillies were playing well his complaints would be justified, but because they aren't, he needs to focus on playing ball and not what the fans are saying.
Trade the a.. h...! Snoddy
