Phillies destroyed by Orioles, 15-4

The Phillies spring record fell to 1-8-1 today with a 15-4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in Ed Smith Stadium before a crowd of 7,297.

The Phillies were out-hit 16-6 and trailed 10-2 after four innings.

Starting pitcher A.J. Burnett allowed five runs in three innings. He surrendered a two-run homer to Baltimore third baseman Ryan Flaherty in the second and then things got worse.

He hit Baltimore left fielder David Lough with a pitch leading off the third inning and the Orioles went on to score four runs in the inning. They tacked on another four runs in the fourth.

Burnett allowed seven hits and six earned runs in three innings. His spring record is now 0-2 and his ERA is 12.60.

He was followed by Miguel Gonzalez, who was touched for four runs on four hits in one inning and his spring ERA is 16.88.

Six pitchers were used by the Phillies and they all allowed at least one run.

Two of the Phillies runs came on solo homers, one by Cameron Rupp in the seventh and the other by Darin Ruf in the eighth.

The Phillies have now lost six of their past seven games. The only game they haven't lost in March was a tie against the Braves on Wednesday.

The Phillies were no-hit through three innings by Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez.

The only Phillie with more than one hit was Rupp, who was 2-for-3 with a single in addition to the homer.

The Orioles scored in every inning except the first. Their 16 hits included two homers. Baltimore right fielder Nick Markakis was 4-for-4 with two doubles and a triple.
