Phillies Minor League Report: Ben Lively handed his first loss of the season

Here's how the Phillies' minor league teams fared on Tuesday, May 19:

Lehigh Valley IronPigs – Triple A

Two clutch performances helped the IronPigs win two games over the Syracuse Chiefs Tuesday at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y.

The IronPigs defeated the Syracuse Chiefs by a score of 2-1 in 10 innings in a game that was picked up after being stopped Monday.

Lehigh Valley then won the second game by a score of 5-4 to earn a series victory over the Chiefs.

During the first contest, Russ Canzler broke up a 1-1 tie in the top of the 10th with a single to left field that plated Cord Phelps. Cesar Jimenez then took the mound in the bottom half of the inning and secured the win by retiring the side. The save was his second of the season.

During the second game, Lehigh Valley pitcher Dustin McGowan was tasked with preserving the team's slim lead in the bottom of the ninth.

Despite running into a two-on, two-out jam, McGowan held firm on his way to collecting the IronPigs' final four outs and his first save of the season.

McGowan took the mound with a lead thanks to Tyler Henson, who hit a double to right field during the seventh inning that plated Brian Bogusevic that gave the IronPigs the lead for good.

Henson led the IronPigs offensively by going 3-for-4 from the plate with three RBI. Canzler, Chase d'Arnaud and Cody Asche were right behind him with two hits apiece.

Starting pitcher Adam Morgan posted a rough outing, allowing four runs on five hits in only 3.2 innings of work. He also walked three batters. The victory went to Colton Murray, who tossed one scoreless inning. Murray's record now stands at 2-2.

The IronPigs will look for their first sweep of the season when they take on the Chiefs again at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday. Lefthander Anthony Vasquez (1-0, 2.13 ERA) is scheduled to start for Lehigh Valley.

Reading Fightin Phils – Double-A

Roman Quinn and Brock Stassi each homered during the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough to help the Fightin Phils, as they fell, 6-4, to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading.

The Fightin Phils went into the bottom of the ninth trailing, 6-1. They were able to close the gap by way of a two-run homer from Quinn. Two batters later, Stassi closed the gap even further with a solo home run with two outs.

But during the next at-bat, Aaron Altherr lined out sharply to center field to end the game.

Quinn and Stassi not only combined for three runs during the ninth, they also combined for four of Reading's eight hits.

Starting pitcher Ben Lively was dealt his first loss of the season after coughing up five runs on seven hits during 8.1 innings on the mound.

The Fightin Phils will try to salvage a win against the Fisher Cats at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday. Aaron Nola (5-2, 1.77 ERA) is slated to start for Reading.

Clearwater Threshers – Class A-Advanced

A two-run homer from Andrew Pullin in the third inning helped the Threshers take down the Brevard County Manatees for the second time in as many days, 6-2, at Space Coast Stadium in Melbourne, Fla.

Pullin's lone hit of the game turned out to be his third home run of the season and helped extend the Threshers' early lead. They never trailed during the contest.

Aaron Brown and Angelo Mora posted productive outings from the plate, as they each went 2-for-4.

Colin Klevin had a strong showing Tuesday, allowing only one run on six hits in six innings. He also struck out five batters.

The Threshers will try to sweep the Manatees at 10:35 a.m. Wednesday. Victor Arano (0-4, 6.12 ERA) will start for Clearwater.

Lakewood BlueClaws – Class A

The BlueClaws fell, 8-2, to the Delmarva Shorebirds on Tuesday at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.

Starter Josh Taylor had a shaky outing, allowing six runs on six hits in four innings of work. Taylor struck out seven and walked four batters during his third loss of the season.

Left fielder Cord Sandberg had an RBI, a walk and a strikeout.

First baseman Damek Tomscha and third baseman Derek Campbell both scored a run and had one hit.

Lakewood is back in action Wednesday at 10:35 a.m. against the Shorebirds. Righty Tyler Viza (3-1, 3.51 ERA) is scheduled to start for the BlueClaws.
