They did better than I expected. I figured them for a pace of 96 wins. I figured they wouldn't hit, but the starting pitching would carry them. The BP has been better than expected. 4thand10
Obviously the team has a great record, but.... I think they definitely need to upgrade the bullpen through either trade or healthy people returning. Contreras seems questionable to come back so they need to take care of that. What I worry about is that the starters are pitching too many innings and that this will make them tired later in the year. They need a stronger bullpen to prevent this from happening. The offense is bad (don't let the 14 run outburst today fool you) and a right-handed bat would be useful. They need to be better on the road too since September has many more away than home games. Still, this is a 57-34 team and clearly the class of the division. Hopefully, the second half will mirror the first. PhillyRules- Surprises? Yes - on the pleasant side - the rookies in the pen. On the unpleasant side the anemic offense. Dragon76
I want to reserve judgment until I see the lineup intact and playing for at least 30 games. I hope it happens down the stretch.
If the Phillies have to win with pitching and defense, so be it. They can do that too. EPC FAN

I got bashed the entire off-season posting here and other places the Phillies will need to add a rh bat that can drive in runs. Mostly, the first half has been about their starting pitching (as we all knew it would be) AND, everyone else gradually coming around to the notion that the Phillies will need to add a rh bat that can drive in runs. 45+ years of baseball knowledge going to waste trying educate dopes on internet chat-boards...oh well, guess we all have our crosses to bear in life... Damn, That's a lot of years. Your knowledge clearly trumps anyone else's even though.....oh never mind drenner

Man, you are so into...yourself. LOL! It was so obvious all along that they needed a RH bat. as soon as they didn't have Werth returning that has always been the point. You knew squat. PHAZED
Hunter Pence for Trevor May, Jiwan Jones, and Josh Zeid. GOLDY2007
Hunter Pence is the perfect fit for the Phillies. If Cosart , Defratus, Biddle, Valle, and Singleton are not part of the trade get him!! GOLDY2007
Rollins is hitting .265 with power, SBs and a good OBA. Gold glove defense. Jim C.
They are on pace for 100+ wins and they have had loads of injuries--who says they need a RH bat? It might be nice, but I'm not sure they need it. I expect Ibanez, Brown and Mayberry to continue to hit better, and all three stud closers and Oswalt back. What is that, 110 wins? Jim C.
throw in David Herndon ab Ben Francisco as well. Maybe Wade would like quantity over quality

Biggest need another reliable arm in pen. The Braves have 13 blown saves, 5 by Kimbrel who has a very good arm. The Phills have 2. Obviously first Contreras then Madson and Bastardo have been excellant. Still some in the pen have underperformed. Perez has been a pleasant surprise. If Madson comes back (which is expected) and Contreras comes back (questionable) It would help greatly. Lidge has thrown in the minors but its hard to expect much with all the injuries. Phills are overbalanced with lefty bats are are vulnerable to tough lefties. Brown starting to live up to top talent. Raul after a horrendous start has been coming on. He just has to go with pitch and stop trying to hit ball 500 ft. He has looked like the old Raul lately. Mayberry has helped. He reminds one of a taller Maddox in center and is a right handed bat. Definately deserves more playing time. Im starting to feel get the arm in pen. Don w
Hopefully the following have played their last first halves in a Phillies uniform....Baez, Contreras, Ibanez, JRoll, Francisco, Gload, Valdez, Blanton, Oswalt and Lidge, who actually hasn't played his first half yet. scootch
well done, good.

I am not totally certain, but I seem to have noticed that therehas been quite a few games that Phillies had great pitching and lost because team could not score any runs. This has to weigh on the starters no matter what they say. I can hear them," Damn, what else do I have to do, score the runs also." Even without those games. the team has done a great job. How many of those games were there, if anyone knows, or am I am imagining that it was a substantial amount. bigphilly12
