Man punches cop, vomits on daughter at Phillies game

POSTED: Thursday, April 15, 2010, 11:08 PM

Seriously, what’s wrong with this guy?
Matthew Clemmens, a 21-year-old from South Jersey, took boorish behavior at a sporting event to an all-time low at Wednesday’s Phillies game at Citizens Bank Park, authorities said.
His alleged crime had nothing to do with snow balls or batteries.
Police said Clemmens intentionally vomited on the 11-year-old daughter of an off-duty Easton police captain, and then slugged the cop in the head several times.
The disgusting display followed several innings’ worth of slurred curses and spilled beer that Clemmens and another man directed at Michael Vangelo, his two daughters and one of their friends, said Philadelphia police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.
“It reminds you of the type of behavior you used to hear about at the 700 level in Veterans Stadium,” Vanore said. “It won’t be tolerated.”
Clemmens’ vile harassment of Vangelo and his daughters was witnessed by another off-duty Easton cop who punched Clemmens after he doused the young girl in vomit, Vanore said.
His antics didn’t end there. When Philadelphia police tried to arrest Clemmens, “he fought with them for a little while. He apparently threw up on one of the officers, too,” Vanore added.
Clemmens, of Cherry Hill, N.J., was charged with simple assault, aggravated assault, harassment, resisting arrest and related offenses.

I think a lifetime ban on this guy attending any major sport within the city limits would be in order. I disagree with the guy who says you can't arrest someone for stupidity. I can't imagine being this guy. I'd have to move to another city.

I'm very troubled by these comments. Saying the police were justified, and the lack of witnesses in the article is troubling as well. Was planning on going to a dozen games this year, but Now I'm having second thoughts. Will spend my money elsewhere. The level of violence that is spewed on this board is troubling as well.

Everyone needs to understand that even if this man did vomit intentionally on the 11 yr old girl. He does not deserve to be beaten. That being said I believe we need to hear from other witnesses, after all there were many at the game. We are only getting one side of the story. Need to have people come forward. This "paper" should try and find them. I also have to laugh when people say to non residents stay out of Philadelphia. Well in this economy I think the restaurants, bars, and Phillies are quite happy to have paying customers. I spend money every time I go into the city, however if the climate is like it is now. I will go elsewhere, maybe go to NYC. And if other suburbanites follow Philadelphia loses.

Jones17 I'm not an idiot, everyone is assuming he vomited on this girl intentionally. No I live in Newtown. Which is very civilized. Only saying it's obvious he was beaten, not making excuses for the man. The man was not convicted yet, from what I heard from his family, and employer. He has never gotten in trouble before. I look at this way, in Philadelphia people are very uncivilized, judging by people saying he deserves a beating. Well I hate to tell you the obvious in United States you are innocent until proven guilty. He probably got sick from the disgusting food at the game and unfortunately vomited on the young girl. At that point the father, an off duty cop became furious and struck him. The police were notified and while handcuffed I bet they beat him. Probably in front of multiple witnesses. Jones17 I assume you're black and have been mistreated by the police. And your judgment is clouded in this manner. I on the other hand never even had to speak to an officer. Or been in any kind of trouble. So my judgment is not tainted. Bottom line he gets a day in court like anyone else, and he does not deserve to be beaten. After all this a civilized society. Not some dictatorship where people are arrested and disappear

Wait a second. 2 cops stand around and let this guy use "slurred curses" around his kids and throw up on his daughter? I'd break every FN bone in his body and then have the Philly cops kick his a--. This is one instance where it would be worth going to jail. What do the cops do in Easton when somebody resists arrest? What a joke. Of course, this kid will sue the PPD. He will also likely sue Citizens Bank Park for serving him alcohol when he was intoxicated.

This guy was wrong in the first place, but would you like to include any of the eyewitness accounts that said the off-duty officer started it, threw him in a chokehold, and then he threw up during the struggle? Just saying, there are two sides to every story.

I agree with PhillySteve, his should have his skull cracked. I know last year I had to take my family home after the A/holes kept cursing. What I want to know is who are the rest of the people involved and what are the Phillies doing about it. Does anyone know it they were season ticket holders? If not then the season ticket holders should be help responsible for the parties who sit in their seats. Does anyone know if the A/hole is got a facebook account? Let's send him a message!!!!!!!!!!

A minimum of 20 wings, 6 dogs and a couple of hoagies probably came up on a wave of suds, judging from the looks of this guy. Suey.

Chrisdt saves, are you seriously defending a 21 years old, not a kid like you state, who is drunk and on purpose, not a accident as you again state, on a 11 years old girl?

That is disgusting. Just goes to show you and PROVES that they are so many people in Philadelphia and South Jersey who are worse than TRAILER TRASH! People here clearly do not know how to act. It is no wonder Philadelphia and South Jersey is known as the "Captial for Trashy People". No class, respect for anyone, manners, etc, etc.about them.

Doesn't the article state that he was punched after he vomits on the girl. That could be the source of the black eye. Regardless, is there really a judge or jury that award this guy anything. Even if he won, I'd bet they award him a symbolic penny.

The guy is where he deserves to be, he made a choice to vomit on those individuals after all his friends were tossed for being drunk and disorderly. This was an awful thing to witness, and one that should not happen at a family environment. Not sure where people decided that their right to drink overshadowed someones right to be able to bring their family to a baseball game and feel safe.

I remember twice in the past getting vomited on at a show or game. The first thing you do is punch the guy in the face! Looking at the photo you can clearly see he's just a kid. How can anyone see the truth in this story. The kid gets sick at the game vomits puts his hands to his mouth, sprays on everyone the cop punches a sick kid in the face, the crowd and cops pals jump in and beat the kid up while he,s still vomiting. What would happen if an 11yr old girl vomited on the cops kids would he punch her in the face? I Have a 10yr old girl at home anytime things get nuts at a game, show, ect. no hero here GONE!

djax10, are you kidding me? It seems like the comments sections on these articles attracts anyone and everyone with something completely ridiculous to say, such as yourself. We "typical Jersey people" are usually punching police officers and vomiting on girls at sporting events? Really? What else would you like enlighten me on? Who the hell cares where the guy is from.

"His alleged crime had nothing to do with snow balls or batteries." Ha! Hilarious! Creative and completely original reporting! Why aren't Chicago fans known as those people who dump beer on apposing players heads and beat-up first base coaches? Does anyone even remember that from a few years ago? Isn't assaulting a coach during the game worse than throwing snowballs? Why do their drunken fans get a free pass? How about what they did to poor Steve Bartman? I don't get it...

westphillyguy hmmmm...typical non-minority behavior when too much beer is involved, must have been a penn state grad-----i know because typical minority behavior would have included shooting him in the back or jumping with 20 of your boyzzzz. or hitting him over the head with a watermelon.

TallT1973- You make a good point about a possible lawsuit.I to hope that this guy has a bad night in the cell(jones17), but if the Blackeye came after cuffs were put on,(that is a big if at this point)then he will file suit.Police must control their emotions. Most cops will remember the psychological question during that stage of the police recru ..process- about the burning house you come apon while walking down the street-do you follow your heart and run in to help save someone,or do you compose yourself and call 911? If this guy wins a lawsuit, hopefully the young ladies who he harrassed, can file a suit against him,and take every penny.

To Jones17 and Phillies2008WSChamps, The South Jerseyans you refer to are not really from South Jersey, they are just the children of the South Philadelphians that moved 15-20 miles over the Walt Whitman bridge back in the 80's and 90's. South Jersey is the beach from Brigantine down to Cape May excluding Wildwood and Margate (Wildwood is the Jersey Shore or Little Philly, whatever you prefer and Margate is, well, Margate). South Jersey extends from the beach 25 miles to the west, everything after that belongs to the White Sneaker Posse members of South Philadelphia.

Tall T, you are an idiot. I hope he gets his a** kicked again while he is sitting in a cell tonight. Don't try to make an excuse for his black eye -- I say it should have worse for his treatment of the young girls at the game. You must live in either the Mayfair/Frankford section or in New Jersey b/c only punks who think they are tough live in those areas & make excuses when they want to start something but have their a**es handed to them instead...

He was beaten by the cops. Not excusing his behavior, but the mug shot shows a black eye. That happened when he was handcuffed and not during the incident. He will most likely be convicted of the charges, but I think he wins in the long run. When he files a lawsuit, and the city settles.
