Madson placed on DL with broken toe

On the day the Phillies' closer returns, their interim closer is going on the disabled list.

The injury bug has struck again.

Righthander Ryan Madson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right big toe suffered after Wednesday's win against San Francisco, the Phillies announced Friday.

Of course, Brad Lidge is returning Friday from the disabled list after off-season elbow and knee surgeries.

To replace Madson, lefthander Antonio Bastardo was recalled from triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was optioned to make room for Lidge originally.

The wording in the Phillies' release about Madson is interesting. The injury was apparently suffered after Madson's appearance Wednesday. Did Madson kick something in the dugout or clubhouse after he blew his second save of the season? Nothing was visibly noticeable during the game.

Madson's disabled list stint is retroactive to April 29. Madson, 29, has gone 1-0 with four saves and a 7.00 ERA in nine appearances this season.

At this point, Jose Contreras is probably the backup closer to Lidge, should he falter.
