As the Phillies return home for a six-game homestand, they have added two players to the roster. Ross Gload was activated from the disabled list and Greg Dobbs' contract was purchased.

The active roster sits at 28, with more additions likely to come when the triple-A season ends Monday.

Gload played two rehab games for single-A Clearwater the last two days and went 1 for 8. He was placed on the DL with a right groin strain retroactive to Aug. 19.

Dobbs, who was designated for assignment twice this season, returns in what will likely be his final month as a Phillie. He batted .210 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 16 games with Lehigh Valley.  In his last six games, he hit .391 with two home runs and eight RBIs.

Dobbs is back because the Phillies are on the hook for the remainder of his $1.35 million salary. He would be paid the money whether he was on the roster or not. So the Phillies bring him back to add a lefthanded bat to the bench.

The 40-man roster is now full. Lefthander Jamie Moyer could be moved to the 60-day disabled list to free up another spot if needed.

do we have any speed that we can bring up as a pinch runner, with the exception of Brown and Fransisco all of our other pinch hitters are not good on the base path.

John Mayberry can run - I think I read he has 17 steals at AAA. Rich Thompson at AAA has 28 or something, but I don't think he's on the 40-man roster. There's at least one spot left, if you count moving Moyer to the 60 day DL as a spot. Are we going to see Savery on the bench or what? He's been hitting really well as the AAA DH for the last week or so, and I think he's already on the 40-man roster.

I think it should be Thompson. He is the fastest and he can hit a little. No else down there knows how to hit over .260. Thompson is hitting .285 last I looked.

    Gload is a no-brainer decision...Dobbs is a braid-dead decision.

Savery has less than 35 AB's all year. Thompson is a solid guy, great speed and excellent defense. No need to clutter roster with Mayberry as the better RH off bench is Benny Fresh. Dobbs must have pictures of RAJ with a mule.

Nice to see Gload back. Hope he can get back to form quickly. Dobbs on the other hand is a waste.

Dobbs probably will win game tonite, then everyone will say, how couldn't they play him in LF all year ? Or, maybe he won't, and he will just still be Ben Afleck's stuntman.

About Matt Gelb and Bob Brookover

Bob Brookover and Matt Gelb team up for their third straight season covering the Phillies for the Inquirer and philly.com.

This is Brookover’s second stint writing about the Phillies, having joined the coverage team after seven years as an Eagles beat writer. Brookover was hired by The Inquirer in 2000 as the Phillies beat writer after spending 13 years writing about the team for two suburban newspapers. While on the Eagles beat, Brookover, who had covered just two winning Phillies teams in 15 seasons, saw the Phillies move into a cash-cow new ballpark and begin playing a brand of the game he found unrecognizable. Gelb is in his third season covering the Phillies. He was hired by The Inquirer in August 2009 after graduating from Syracuse University. He has also covered baseball at The Star-Ledger and Cape Cod Times. Born and raised in Bucks County, he attended Central Bucks High School West. Follow him on Twitter here.
