Oh, whoops.
They will play meaningful baseball in South Philadelphia for the first time in 2012 this afternoon. Charlie Manuel will use his fourth different lineup combination in four games.

4. Hunter Pence 9
5. Shane Victorino 8
6. John Mayberry Jr. 3
7. Carlos Ruiz 2
8. Freddy Galvis 4
9. Cole Hamels 1

DJ Jazzy Jeff is running the block party outside. Elena Della Donne is throwing out the first pitch. Go crazy!

The bottom line is , because Howard and Utley are injured, and one or both may never be a major contributor again. Amaro through injuries is getting his small ball. He just failed to sign anyone who could hit. Maybe it's time to turn his job over to Gillick or someone else who understands it takes hitters to score runs. This team as it stands is inept. phineas
Koons, you're joking right? If they are 5 back in April they are dead? The Cardinals were 9 back in September. Listen, I want them to win this series as much as anyone, but the first 6 games of the season is like the equivalent of the first half of the first game of the NFL season. Let's keep things in perspective. Phils Phan 28
Having 4 quality OFers is a good problem. Not having even one MLB caliber SS is a really bad problem. On balance I would not have done it pre-season. Which is not to say it would have been a bad move, if he continues to mash then it would look like genius, but you couldn't know that based on the information they had at the time. Phils Phan 28
Likethe others, there are some players now that must go back to Lehigh or just dropped. No one will want them. Then replace Herndon and of course, someone will have to take Qualls place for a bit. Already 2 games behind, this series will probably make or break this team already. If they are 5 games out at the end of it, the season is simply gone and trades will have to be made. I see this team in 3rd place or lower, all year. The 5 yrs. are now over unless a miracle happens. I still believe in miracles but time is already against this team of hitters who resemble the Sisters of Mary squad. Koons
Mayberry will play 1B until Howard is ready, which is not a given. Then you have a nice problem with 4 OF and Victorino a Free Agent to be. Trade bait? EL Zorro
Zorro - so now we've got Cespedes and Galvis in the lineup instead of Rollins and Mayberry. That doesn't sound like much upgrade to me unless you think Cespedes is going to put up MVP type numbers (way too early to say that) - Galvis doesn't look like a major league hitter and you've promoted him to full time starter. I just don't see how it fits their needs - not saying it's a horrible idea, I just don't see it. Phils Phan 28

Galvis should bat behind Cole. SouthJerseyRob
Its too early for all this stress guys. I have the same concerns as the rest of you but lets give them a few weeks. The Phils have never hit in Pittsburgh for some reason, thats not new. I do agree with Juan Pierre needing to play he can get on base and that is what we need right now. The offense concerns me but I think it will me manageable when Howie gets back in the lineup. What may end up being the bigger concern is the bullpen. We are putting a lot on Bastardo and Stutes being the same guys from last year. You never know what ya get with relievers, even the guys that get the 2-4 million contracts seem like a coin toss every year. philsfan in the atx
Check out our latest post onn the Pirates series. Chalie got the lineup pretty close but needs to work on the strategy. Need a big one from Cole. Sign him now!!!

This is the best everyday lineup. bdd5014- YES! This is exactly the line up I posted this morning. Let's hope we can get some offense going for Cole...was hoping to hear about his new contract this morning...still hoping!
italia, one good season in Cuba last year? Really? As a 23 year old he was part of Cuba's National Team that competed in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and made the All Classic Team. Some of the best Major leaguers from all over the world played, including our own Shane Victorino and Jimmy Rollins, not to mention Ryan Braun, Jeter, Longoria, David Wright, etc. Get informed before commenting. EL Zorro
PhilsPhan, Cespedes and Victorino can play anywhere in the OF. I believe Pence can play LF, don't you think so? Galvis is as good a fielder as Rollins. You are basically getting a more versatile and younger player, who happens to hit for average and power for the same money, while getting the same steady defense at SS with the younger Galvis. By doing that you don't need to commit to both Victorino or Pence when they become FA and instead can concentrate in getting younger at 2B and 3B. But I guess it's too late for that. EL Zorro
Please go ahead and sign Fontenot to play second. At least he's a major league player. Enough of the Galvis "GDP" experiment. We need at least a little offense out of that position. farside37
Solid lineup. No Nix, Wiggs, or Schneider? Is this a rare moment of lucidity in the Phillies bureaucracy?!? thejavadrinker
the 3 years 30 million for rollins isnt bad....and nobody knew how good cespedes was gonna be all he put out was a workout video and had one great season last year in cuba italia1234
So we should have signed Cespedes instead of Rollins, huh? So, do you have them moving Pence or Victorino to SS? You can argue easily that every team in the league undervalued him (although you'd be doing that based on just a few games of results), but he doesn't address a positional need for the Phillies, and it is a false choice between him and Rollins. Phils Phan 28
"Record when X Player starts" is a phony stat. It's always used with bit players where the sample size is too small, it often correlates with some other fact (for Schneider, catching Worley often), and it always returns to the mean over time. If the team won all those games because of Schneider he'd be playing more often. They didn't, and he isn't. Phils Phan 28
I dont know why people and sports talk show hosts don't talk about this more, but following 2007, Gillick FIRED the entire coaching staff (except for Charlie) due to lack of production (and that team had MUCH MORE TALENT than this team). In 2008 they go to and win the WS. Amaro needs to step up and realize Pete McKannan, Gregg Gross and Sam Perlozo are no Jimy Williams and Davey Lopes. Charlie is no LaRussa, Girardi, Maddon and needs help managing tactical situtions. Citizenc92
I agree the with Zorro. Rollins' contract is another example of overpaying for old players. Pierre needs to play. wmontanez27
What Schneider brings to the team is the fantastic record the Phillies had last year in games he started. Everyone wants the TEAM to win, and they won at a higher percentage with him catching than their overall winning percentage! He gives Chooch a day off when Worley pitches, AND the team wins! Works for me. SEEK313
That Cespedes kid would look pretty good hitting in the middle of the line up. .308, 3 HR 7 RBI, 1.077 SLG in his first 4 games. We signed J-Roll to basically the same contract the 27 year old slugger got from Oakland. EL Zorro
Call Bowker....see if he needs a roomie over there....ship Nix STAT NewMick314
PhilsPhan28 unfortunately makes a very good point. They need JMJ's defense in left in lots of situations. Look at game 1, he made 2 phenomenal catches that Pierre wouldn't have even been close to. So we will have to deal with some questionable 1B-men for awhile at least for some games. kilo_005
OH, BTW, just in response to the first poster, I really think they need to look for a new backup catcher. Not only is Schneider very nearly an automatic out (and has been for a year), can he not throw to second? I did not watch every second of the game yesterday due to family being over, but I think there were three stolen base attempts, and not only were all 3 successful, but I don't think he made a throw to 2nd on any of them. Add to that the dropped strikeout play, and then tell me what Schneider is bringing to the team? Phils Phan 28
This is probably your best offensive lineup, of course depending on how Pierre plays (I'm not sold on him but that was a big hit in yesterday's game). The problem they have is that Mayberry is their best LF, he is a defensive question mark at first just due to inexperience, and Pierre is sub par in LF. They probably get away with this at home, since LF is so small, but in a bigger park it is hard to take Mayberry's glove out of LF. Phils Phan 28
If Nix never plays again it will be too soon. Blue and White
This is ( and needs to be) the lineup until the Piece is back. JP in left and JMJ at first. Charlie only needed 3 games to figure out that Nix and Wiggs are bench players, not starters. KvK
I would use this lineup everyday. Please no more Wig, Nix or Schnied. Maybe even flop Mayberry & Ruiz. therev
