Game 17: A day of rest for Pence
Matt Gelb
PHOENIX —
UPDATE (7:50 p.m.): Hunter Pence is sidelined by a left shoulder injury.
EARLIER: Charlie Manuel did not specifically name Hunter Pence during his postgame lecture Sunday about his players pressing. But Pence is the best example. He made five outs with four swings Sunday and cost the Phillies three runs with his defense.
So Pence will sit on the bench for the first time all season in Monday's series opener vs. the Diamondbacks. He is 0 for his last 15.
That leaves Charlie Manuel with his 13th different lineup in 17 games.
1. Juan Pierre 7
2. Placido Polanco 5
3. Jimmy Rollins 6
4. Ty Wigginton 3
5. Shane Victorino 8
6. Carlos Ruiz 2
7. John Mayberry Jr. 9
8. Freddy Galvis 4
9. Kyle Kendrick 1
Kendrick starts opposite Wade Miley, a lefthander for Arizona. This was originally supposed to be Cliff Lee vs. Daniel Hudson but both pitchers went on the disabled list this past weekend.
Wigginton actually batted cleanup three times in 2011 with Colorado. Mayberry is in there despite 13 strikeouts in 40 at-bats.
Have a question? Send it to Matt Gelb's Mailbag.
Not panic time yet, fellas.
We have a little ways to go before that. Alpheratz
everything I said all winter was proven accurate beyond anyone's worst nightmares --instead of attacking the messenger, fans who realy cared about the team who would have applied minimal critical analysis would have realized I was correct..a fan's "obligation" is not to support the team right or wrong but to urge them to get it right warbiscuit- Are you the Unabomber?
The only person who is reading your manifestos is you. PhightinPhil
See you next year phils fans 658012
In a message dated 1/5/2012 2:10:03 P.M. Eastern Standard Time, warbiscuit writes: "one man this singularly knowledgeable fan (to the exclusion of all you ignorant naive lackeys) dislikes more than Reid is the clueless Ruben Amaro who has won as many championships as Reid (zero), albeit with so many more advantages to work with, to wit, a bigger budget than anyone else in the league (as opposed to the nfl where all teams are on equal financial footing) and, when, he began in 2008, the core of a championship team and one of the best farm systems in baseball.. ah, but he's gone out and got terrific players like Lee and Halladay so what has he done wrong, you ask? ah --that's easy to any half-intelligent baseball person: he puts all his budget into a few players (including lot of completely wasted salary like Howard, Blanton, Ibanez, Polanco, etc) and ignores depth and balance and bench and bullpen and consistently fills the remainder of the roster with literally garbage (Bruntlett, Schneider, Baez, Gload, Herndon, Nix, Willis, to name a few who he's obtained who are literally not even legitimate major leaguers), when for 3 yrs, had he just went out and made some adequate acquisitions a championship could have been in reach, and to add insult to injury he has destroyed the franchise's future in the proces by losing about a dozen legitimate prospects in his panic July moves" warbiscuit
Someone? was actually saying we should have gotten Marlin Byrd BA. .047 before the Red Sox or bring up Kratz Ba.226 OPS 565 at LHV or Pods Ba.200 OPS 515. Dom Brown with his glove of renoun BA 263 OPS 680 . So much for arm chair GMs. DUDESKINS- My arm chair GM argument for Kratz in the offseason was this: He's pretty much your prototype back-up catcher. He's a RH bat who's shown some power. He has options. So why sign an older, yet-another LH bat, who hit under .200 in 2011 in Schneider? He costs 800K and who you can't move him without waiving him. I'll stand by that arm chair assessment. Kratz wouldn't be a magic answer, but could be part of a bigger answer that's a younger, more flexible (as in younger with options) bench. Problem is those decisions were to be made over the winter.
I love my Phillies but I did not agree with all the off-season moves.

Warbiscuit is his own biggest fan. Here's something WB. I don't care what you think. Don't matter if you're right or wrong. Nobody does. Nobody can do anything about injuries, slumps, age, or decisions good or bad. Just be a fan. Exercise your right to not watch, not buy jerseys, or hats, or shirts, but please please please give everyone a break and stop brow beating us about it. We have eyes. Thanks. Grazman
"Silence in the face of evil is itself evil.... Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act."—Dietrich Bonhoeffer...whether out of sheer incompetence (as many believe) or arrogance (as Granny Hammer asserts), when Ruben was destroing the team and dumb fans like dudeskins are too enraptured by his couple of big-name acquisitions to comprehend what was happening, they are simply complicit in the "evil" of someone who destroyed the hopes and dreams of millions of fans warbiscuit
Grazman -- I'l browbeat you all I want because all winter i was saying the g.m. is practicing gross malpractice and wasting hundreds of millions of dollars and destroying the Phils last chance, and dumb-a@@ jerks like you were brow-beating me for speaking the truth -- you can excerize your right to not read or post on these blogs warbiscuit
Elmer Valo played on the 1961 Phillies. He had faster bat speed than Jim Thome, could run faster than Tye Wiggington, and forgot more about hitting than the silly, tired old fool manager for this season (so far) ever knew.. He was paid $7,500 for the season. Wilhelm Von Humboldt
Dude. Seriously. Give it a rest. We all know what's happening. We can see it. Things aren't working out right now. But every day? Do you really enjoy the sound of your own keyboard that much? And calling players, people, pieces of sh*t shows an apalling lack of class and upbringing. If you want respect on these boards, trying earning it. Grazman
grazman -- the time to realize "things aren't working" is before you waste 3 1/2 yrs, commit yourslef to hundreds of millons of dollars of wasted contracts and lose all your prosepcts... if you want to give it a rest dude then do so; if you have an immature need to get the last word to look good to an anonymous world that doesn't even know your or my real names, then that's your issue that you might want to explore with your therapist warbiscuit
LOL! I'll do that. Grazman
