Honors for Halladay, Ruiz

POSTED: Thursday, October 28, 2010, 3:20 PM

The Phillies' Roy Halladay was named the National League Outstanding Pitcher today in the Players Choice Awards.

The announcement was made by the Major League Baseball Players Association on ESPN Radio this morning.

Halladay led all big-league pitchers in wins (21), shutouts (4), complete games (9) and innings pitched (250.2). The seven-time All Star finished second in the NL with 219 strikeouts and third with a 2.44 ERA – the second lowest ERA in his 13-year career (2.41 in 2005).

Halladay previously was named the NL Pitcher of the Year by The Sporting News in a vote of players, general managers and league executives.

Tampa Bay's David Price was named the Outstanding Pitcher in the American League.

Halladay will receive $20,000 to donate to a charity through the MLB Players Trust, a charitable foundation created and run by the players themselves. The Players Trust raises funds and attention for issues affecting the needy and promotes community involvement.

Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz was among the three winners of the Pride of Philly awards from the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

He joined the national championship Villanova football team and Boston College’s Mark Herzlich, from Conestoga High.

Ruiz led the Phillies in hitting and played superbly behind the plate to help guide the pitching staff to a team ERA of 3.68.

Villanova went 14-1 record in 2009 and beat Montana for the FCS championship. Herzlich overcame Ewing's sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, to return to the team for his senior year at BC.

The three honorees will be represented at the Hall's Class VII Induction Ceremonies on Nov. 11 at the Sheraton Society Hill.

Very well deserved. He is the best pitcher in baseball and I am very glad he came here. It is remarkable to realize that he wanted to come to the Phils so badly that he left years and millions and millions of dollars on the table that he could have gotten as a free agent. The Phils were very fortuante he did that.

congrats roy! i cant think of a more powerful and productive athlete to come into this city and do the things that you did in your 1st year of service here. amazing is an understatement. its exciting to think you can actually surpass some of those numbers next year, though i would like to see a decrease in your innings pitched.

In all the disappointment in the NLCS, we tend to forget how good we were just to get there! And theses two were hugely important to us doing so well. Incredible that we were down so deep for so long! And to come back and lead the freaking MAJORS in wins .....couldn't have done it without The Three Aces...and Chooch! Almost forgot how magnificent Doc pitched.....many, many thanks from another fan for deciding THIS was the place you want to be! Here's hoping we regroup next year, get some run production and challenge for the Division, the League and the World Series next season. Again, thanks to ALL the players, coaches, Manager, and GM for what they did to give us this fine team in 2010!

Hooray for them!!! ...and once again we get nothing. Is it ok if I start to get sick of individual awards to people who not only play games for a living, but get millions to do it? Hooray for them! Hooray! I's so happy for them! I hope they all win an award this offseason! And free dinners...and cars and trips! HOORAY!
